Meet Your New Staff Retiree Employee
Assembly Representatives
| |
Cornell retirees, Frank Cantone and Thomas Hambury, have been appointed to serve as Staff Retiree Representatives to the Employee Assembly (EA) for the next two academic years.
Frank joined Cornell Environmental Health and Safety in 1999 as the university’s first Biological Safety Officer. He developed working relationships with numerous faculty, staff, and students throughout campus to integrate safe practices and policies around handling biohazardous materials in laboratories and other work environments. Frank played critical roles during post-9/11 anthrax, the first SARS, H1N1 influenza, and Ebola responses. He transitioned to Director of Emergency Management in late 2014 and, along with staff from many departments across campus as well as senior administration, developed a robust program to assist the university with preparation and response to a variety of incidents and emergencies, including severe weather, utility outages, active threats, and infectious diseases, such as SARS-CoV-2. He retired in 2020 for two days before returning and working full-time to assist with the university’s COVID-19 response. He retired a second time in 2021 and now spends his time photographing landscapes, hiking, cycling, volunteering with several organizations, DIY construction projects, and enjoying time with his wife, three children, and five grandchildren. Frank is excited to re-engage with Cornell and work with colleagues to create a fulfilling experience for current staff and future retirees.
Tom joined Cornell in 2000 to direct the Johnson School’s then-new Executive MBA Program in Metro New York. As that program grew, he also worked closely with the team that built the Cornell Executive MBA Americas and with non-degree executive education in the Johnson School. He retired in 2011 but returned to teach management communications in the School of Hotel Administration and later in the Johnson School as Sr. Lecturer, retiring a second time in 2021. His background includes work in MBA program administration and in HR management at Vanderbilt University and the University of Rochester. Tom lives on a farm in Lansing with his wife, Judith Nusbaum, 25 sheep, a llama, a dog, and assorted cats.
Frank and Tom will generally alternate attendance at the twice-monthly EA meetings and will send you periodic updates on retiree-related EA activities, events, and initiatives. Feel free to contact them via email with any questions/concerns or to welcome them! Frank can be reached at fac2@cornell.edu and Tom at tbh9@cornell.edu.

Shooting the Moon with Zoe Ponterio, Manager, Spacecraft Planetary Image Facility (SPIF)
September 21, 2023, 2:00 PM, Kendal at Ithaca
Just one year after the first photograph of a human was taken, the first image through a telescope was captured, and the subject of that first astrophotograph was the Moon.
Now, robotic spacecraft carrying state-of-the-art cameras send back images of newly explored worlds from billions of miles away, but our fascination with our nearest neighbor in the vastness of space has only grown. We still strive to capture its serene beauty, and even in the pure pursuit of science we cannot help but create art.
Lectures are in person and online via Zoom and will be held in the auditorium at Kendal of Ithaca (2230 N Triphammer Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850) and are also recorded for future viewing. Come 30 minutes prior to the lecture for refreshments and great company!

Perhaps the one you care for is living in a facility, independently in their own home, or in your home. If so, you are invited to attend meetings of the Caregiver Support & Education Network (CSEN).
The August CSEN meeting will focus on a piece of self-care – healthy nutrition for the caregiver. Whether it is on a regular basis or during moments of crisis, being sure to fuel and hydrate your body is essential to health. Listen in on a conversation between Ruth Merle-Doyle from the Work/Life team and Derek Fiacco, Nutrition and Health Outreach Specialist from Cornell Wellness, to learn tangible nutrition tips for many caregiving situations. There will be plenty of time to address your nutrition/food-related questions as well so bring them, along. We welcome all to this conversation, whether you are currently or not currently caregiving.
Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice.

Driving Safety for Older Adults
Wednesday, September 6, 2023, 1:00 PM
Register
The topic of driving is often one that involves many emotions. For many, driving equates to independence and the freedom to go when and where you want. As a person ages, it can be helpful to openly communicate about driving abilities and safety, rather than doing so due to a crisis such as a crash or a “close call.” Families often turn to professionals for guidance and insights on how to talk about driving and the best approach to taking away the keys. Join this webinar to learn about the importance of developing a plan to help older adults move out of the driver’s seat when necessary, while still remaining engaged with friends, family, and community.
Participants in this webinar will be able to:
- Identify potential signs an older adult might be an unsafe driver
- Understand some common conditions and aging-related diseases that can affect driving
- Learn the best approaches to develop a plan to transition out of driving before a crisis occurs
- Discover tips to help reduce the potential for isolation and depression after an older adult stops driving

Project CARE Needs Visiting Volunteers
Project CARE’s friendly visitor program provides companionship by matching an older adult with a volunteer for weekly home visits. Many seniors in the community greatly benefit and find comfort from a weekly visit. Volunteers can provide conversation, play games, go for a walk, work on a puzzle together, read, watch a movie, and so much more. This service can provide in-home support and companionship to older adults, especially those that are socially isolated, as well as family caregivers.
If you are interested in becoming a Project CARE volunteer, or a Tompkins County resident aged 60 or over who would like to be matched with a volunteer, please contact Dawn Sprague, Project CARE Coordinator at the Tompkins County Office for the Aging at 607-274-5499 or via email.
