What's happening at Hope Nottingham?

September 2024

In this month's issue, we highlight World Mental Health Day, appeal for volunteers for November's Tesco Winter Food Collection and look forward to an exciting new initiative to support food projects across Broxtowe.

Being there when it matters

Dear Dominique,,

Thursday 10th October is World Mental Health Day. People who need to turn to our food banks often feel stressed, worried and lonely - feelings that can affect any of us at any time. We know getting the right support can be life changing, which is why the volunteers at our food banks and community hubs are there to chat, share a cuppa, listen and signpost people to appropriate help and support.

No-one should have to face these challenges alone and we are committed to supporting people get the help they need.

If you, or someone you know needs mental health support, please do see the contact details of support organisations towards the bottom of this email.

Thank you for your continued support.

"I didn't have hope when I came in here, but now I do because of you."

Help us purchase our new van!

After many years of faithful service, our old ex-DHL van has finally given up and urgently needs to be replaced. We are reliant on our van to keep our 14 foodbanks well stocked and to collect donations from supermarkets, churches, schools, and lots of community groups.

After searching far and wide we have located what we hope to be a suitable ex lease van for a bargain price of £10,000 and need to raise this amount as soon as possible. The van is about to be inspected by the AA and will hopefully arrive this week, as our current loan van has to be returned on Wed 2nd October. Can you help by donating to our Van fund?

We need your help!

We are fast approaching the Tesco National Winter food collection and we need your help! During the last week of November, Tesco stores across the country will be holding collections for their customers to donate to their local Trussell food bank. For Hope Nottingham, this is a vital opportunity to fill our food bank stockrooms before what is always a busy Christmas period.

How can you help?

Donate a few extra items at your local Tesco store during the week!

We are always grateful for all the food donations we receive and our volunteers would love to say thankyou in person! You can check what items we are currently in need of here.

Volunteer for a collection day slot!

We are currently looking for volunteers who would be able to greet customers, receive and help pack donations, and thank people who donate. We are in need of volunteers who are able to help for a two-hour slot (either 10am-12 noon, 12 noon-2pm, or 2pm-4pm) at either Beeston or Toton Tesco Extra stores on Thursday 28th, Friday 29th or Saturday 30th November and at Carlton Tesco on Saturday and Sunday.

If you or your organisation would like to help, we'd love to hear from you.

Please contact Helen Voce, our Area Operations Manager by email.

Oxjam is nearly here!

It is now only a week until this year's Oxjam Beeston Music Festival on Saturday 5th October. Hope Nottingham are very grateful to have been selected (along with our friends at Middle Street Resource Centre) as one of two local charities supported by this year's event. Oxjam 2024 promises to be the best yet, with bands and artists performing at 20 different venues across Beeston.

To buy tickets (wristbands allowing entry to all venues cost £10 for adults and £5 for 12-18s) please visit the Oxjam website or Facebook page.

Why not help out?

The Oxjam team are also looking for volunteers who can help out on the day to help the event run smoothly and raise as much money as possible (plus you 'll get a free wristband as a volunteer!)

You can find out more and apply by scanning the QR code or signing up here.

Huge thanks to the Oxjam team and everyone supporting the event - we can't wait to see you there!

Nominate Hope to help us win £1000!

It is still not too late to help us win £1000 from the Benefact Group's Movement for Good awards by nominating Hope Nottingham. Anyone can nominate a charity to enter the draw, and the more nominations we receive the more chance we have of winning funding, so do tell your family and friends!

You can nominate us (search for "Hope Nottingham CIO") here.

Feeding Broxtowe Project

We are incredibly proud that Hope Nottingham has been commissioned by Broxtowe Borough Council to conduct a listening and learning project to better understand the provision offered by different food-based projects in Broxtowe. Funding for the project has been provided by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in order to map the different food-based projects across the borough, share best practice and support, and develop ways in which the various charities, agencies and voluntary groups can better work together to support residents of Broxtowe facing food insecurity and poverty.

We would love to hear from any groups involved in providing food to Broxtowe residents (such as food banks, food clubs, surplus food distribution groups, projects offering social eating or other relevant stakeholders). Please do contact us here to find out more.

We need you!

We couldn't do what we do without our fantastic team of volunteers!

We are currently in particular need of HR and training volunteers (see advert), Befrienders and Café Volunteers for Netherfield Community Café as well as Front of House volunteers at our Hope House Community Café in Beeston.

To find out more about these opportunities and other volunteer vacancies at Hope Nottingham, see our Volunteering webpage here.

Hope Community meals

Our next pay-what-you-can meals are on Tuesday 8th October at Hope House, Beeston and Monday 28th October at Carlton Community Hub

Our community meals are a great chance to enjoy a delicious meal cooked by our wonderful volunteers and to get to know others in the community. Why not bring a friend?

We'd love to see you there! Let us know you are coming in advance by calling on 0303 040 1110 or by email. Please note: numbers at Carlton are strictly limited to 60 due to fire regulations.
