ODU’s School of Nursing has been awarded HRSA funding that provides stipends to cover NP education (MSN and/or DNP) for students who participate in clinics focusing on rural and underserved populations. ODU NP faculty and VCNP members, Emily Horvath, Amanda Hudgins and Tammy Speerhas, oversee NP students in these clinics, which include three free ODU Community Care Nurse-led clinics serving homeless individuals, rural Southampton County and individuals unable to get access to care. In addition, students work with teams that include other healthcare professionals and utilize telehealth to deliver care at a distance.
Working in the clinics allows students to gain an understanding of the social determinants of health that complicate care, how telehealth can break down barriers, the impact of bringing care to patients, how to collaborate with other professions, and how to evaluate and improve the practice outcomes. NP faculty and students are able to experience providing care to the full extent of their profession.
