Stalking and Abuse in Later Life

In honor of National Stalking Awareness Month, we want to highlight the experiences of older stalking victims who are often overlooked. Due to ageist biases, older stalking victims are less likely to be believed compared to younger victims. In reality, over 1 million people over the age of 50 are stalked each year.

Stalking includes a wide range of threatening and disturbing behaviors, and many types of elder abuse can include stalking behaviors — from psychological abuse to financial exploitation. Just like in other forms of elder abuse, the majority of stalking perpetrators know their victims. 42% of stalking perpetrators are acquaintances and 40% are current or former partners.

On average only 30% of all people who experience stalking will report to law enforcement, with older adults reporting at even lower rates. Learn more about the experiences of older survivors of stalking and how to support them.

Building Caregiver Resilience: A Framework for Care presented by Aaron Blight, Ed.D

Caregivers are usually so busy with the tasks of caregiving that they rarely reflect upon the significance of their activities, including how caregiving changes their identity, their view of self, their relationship with others, and their place in society. This thoughtful and inspiring presentation draws upon research to explain caregiving as a phenomenon of social science, with an eye toward the development of caregiver resilience.
