Light in the Window - January 23, 2024

As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.”

Mark 1:16-20

Ok, so maybe it’s not the Galilee Sea, but the Lake Erie shoreline (even in winter) is still beautiful. The water’s edge is a good place to contemplate God’s call, to consider what we will leave behind on the shore and what we will carry forward into the horizon of a new day. I don’t know why God so often shows up when we draw near to the water, ready to be re-born. I suppose anyone who doesn’t want to change should stay away from the edge, avoid the liminal space between old and new, dry land and moving current, font and baptismal water.

What do you do when you sense Jesus walking along the shore of your life?

Praying for guidance is a good place to start. Reading the Bible helps us to see the patterns of God’s work in the world. Taking on a new ministry or act of service (if you aren’t already overwhelmed) can also open something new in your spiritual life. But maybe also, in these dreary January days, it’s a good time to watch the stories of the Gospels unfold in video form. A series called The Chosen has been out for a while, and though I was skeptical at first, I think it is well done and worth watching. The first episode includes our scripture passage from last Sunday- the calling of the disciples, with a creative prologue on Mary of Magdala. If you watch it, let me know what you think.

Lord, you have come to the lakeshore

looking neither for wealthy nor wise ones;

you only asked me to follow humbly.

O Lord, with your eyes you have searched me,

and while smiling have spoken my name;

now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me;

by your side I will seek other seas.

(from the hymn Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore, verse 1)
