HAPPY THANKSGIVING

by Jo Strausz Rosen

I hope everyone enjoyed a special gathering in honor of Thanksgiving. I felt lucky to host the annual holiday and spend time with family and friends. We discussed how fortunate we are to have each other in our lives. To smile, to laugh and to distract each other from disheartening news we hear daily.

A VISIT FROM

THE SCOUTS

This week, 27 kindergarten Girl Scouts from Hillel Day School, along with their parents, visited Fleischman Residence. They performed songs about Shabbat, brought cookies to share and after snack time, the Scouts and the residents created picture frames using art supplies. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful visit. We look forward to seeing them again.

PUMPKIN PARTY

Residents on the fourth floor of Oak Park’s Coville Apartments held a “Harvest Day Celebration" recently with donuts and apple cider. Volunteer Carole Goldstein Oppenheim set up arts and crafts using fall decorations and assisted the residents in making their own pumpkins using Styrofoam, flowers, and feathers. Administrator Mona Hansen-Hill led a discussion about memories of past fall celebrations.

A 'NO KIDDING' NOVEMBER FUN FACT

Competitive art used to be an Olympic sport. Between 1912 and 1948, the international sporting events awarded medals for music, painting, sculpture and architecture.

FRIENDS OF JSL

“Don’t Write Me Off!”

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the amazing anthology written by our residents. “Don’t Write Me Off!” copies are available in the boutique, on Amazon, and on our website. These stories cover a range of experiences from sky diving to a burning police car on the front lawn, but most show the grit and grace with which our writers live with the challenges of older adulthood. It’s by turns funny, sad, surprising, and very, very interesting. Also, it’s a great holiday gift!

Start Next Year with Us!

My new year’s resolution is going to be welcoming lots of lovely folks to Jewish Senior Life as volunteers. If your resolution is going to be having fun helping out and getting to know the residents here (or if you are a resident), we’re a perfect match! Call or email me (Beth) at

248-592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org or fill out our online volunteer form and I’ll call you!

Boutique

Toys, scarves, books, guy stuff, jewelry, stationary, stuffed animals, travel mugs, decorative soap dishes/soap, chanukiot, mezuzot, mittens, hats, coats, pants, tops, bibs, compacts, picture frames, purses, puzzles, and more! Come on in and support JSL by shopping!

AT HOME WORKOUT

Stretching Before Snoozing

This video focuses on bedtime stretches to help you get better sleep. For good health, getting adequate sleep is just as important as exercise and eating healthy food. Research shows that getting enough quality sleep at the right times is vital for mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

PIZZA POT PIE

If you love pizza, this dish is for you! Served in an untraditional way, and filled with a unique blend of vegetables, both adults and kids will be excited for dinner. Feel free to substitute your favorite vegetables for the ones in the recipe.

A Note on Thanksgiving

People have asked me if I, as a Rabbi, celebrate Thanksgiving. They are surprised to hear my affirmative response.

To give thanks is ingrained in my daily life. In fact, the very first word of my morning prayers is the Hebrew word "Hodu." Ironically, this Hebrew word denotes both “thank you” and “turkey.” This sets the earliest precedent for the connection between thank you and turkey.

Let us celebrate Thanksgiving every day and every moment for G-d prepares our every step we take.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
