Weekly eNews

August 25, 2023

The pastoral and program staff have just returned from two days of learning, reflection, and visioning in Montreat, NC. This annual retreat is always a meaningful opportunity for us to briefly unplug from our regular routines and focus on strengthening our relationships as a program staff team. As in past years, this time together was filled with laughter, honest sharing, productive planning, prayer and praise, and much added insight about how we can continue to grow in our individual and collective callings as servant leaders of First Presbyterian. Most importantly though, it was yet another reminder of what a joy it is to be a part of such a faithful, gifted, compassionate, and funny staff. FPC is truly blessed!

With school back in swing and summer travel slowly winding down, we are now looking ahead to an exciting (and full) Fall around church. As always, you can find details about all the upcoming happenings below. Please make special note that Rally Day is right around the corner on September 10. This is the day when our regular Sunday school offerings – including a new class for parents of youth and college age students – will be relaunching. We will also have a BBQ picnic for all ages in the Family Life Center parking lot after the 11:00am Traditional Service. So if you have been looking to get (re)connected to church, now is a great time!

Blessings to you all. See you at church. Invite a friend.

Peace,

Rev. Alan F. Dyer

August Sermon Series

Paul’s Letter to the Romans provides one of the most concise, clear, and beautiful presentations of Christian doctrine in all the Bible. It is a letter that gets to the “heart of the matter” when it comes to crucial questions about sin, redemption, grace, and the life of faith for believers.

This four-week series during the month of August is an invitation for us to know Paul better and to understand how this ancient letter continues to shape our faith in Christ today.

August Combined Adult Sunday School

Sundays, 10:00am in Fogartie Hall

This four-week study explores the historical context, structure, vocabulary, themes, and influence of Paul’s magnum opus Letter to the Romans. Come learn why this single book of the Bible has been so influential to Christians throughout history and how we can fruitfully read Romans today.

Lemonade on the Lawn

Thursday, October 19 | 8:30am-2:00pm

On Thursday, October 19 the Faith Initiative To End Child Poverty will host a summit from 8:30am-2:00pm focused on education, especially how congregations can best support students and educators. The Faith Initiative is a consortium of congregations working to end child poverty in Spartanburg. The Summit will be held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Spartanburg (502 S. Daniel Morgan Ave., Spartanburg, SC 29306). A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. All are welcome.

The Faith Initiative Summit is in partnership with the Spartanburg Academic Movement's 10th anniversary conference the day before, on October 18. This article by Dr. Irvin Scott from the Harvard LIFE (Leadership Initiative for Faith and Education) Program is our framework for the October 19 Summit.

Please RSVP so we can have a good estimate of attendance for food and seating. The Faith Initiative would especially like to invite congregations and educators who are partnered to serve students in our schools throughout Spartanburg County. If you are aware of ministries or congregations that work in partnership with our schools, please share with us who to contact in order to invite them to the Summit.

To RSVP for the the Summit and to connect us with ministries partnered with schools, please contact Scott Neely (neelysj@gmail.com).

Winter Warmth 2023

Do You Knit or Crochet? We Need You!

Although the weather is far from being chilly, we’re already preparing for FPC’s largest annual mission project, Winter Warmth, where we distribute brand-new coats to children in need across Spartanburg County.

In addition to coats, children will also be receiving hats and scarves, handmade by members of the church. That’s where you come in! If you’re able to knit or crochet, we could really use your help in making it happen!

Winter Warmth will take place on November 11th this year. It’s never too early to start! If you have questions, please email them to winterwarmth@gmail.com.
