Runoff Election for The Lakeland Northwest District City Commission Seat

 The Polk County Supervisor of Elections and the City of Lakeland will oversee a runoff election on December 5, 2023, for the City Commissioner representing the NW District. Incumbent Sam Simmons and candidate Guy LaLonde are running for the seat. Commissioners are elected citywide, meaning all registered voters within the Lakeland municipal jurisdiction can vote for the NW District representative.

Lakeland Fire Department Set to Perform Live Fire Training at Lakeland Linder International Airport

Lakeland Fire Department will perform live-fire training at Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) from Dec. 4, 2023, to Dec. 9, 2023 (Monday-Saturday). Training will occur on the airport's south side near SUN n' FUN, located at 4175 Medulla Rd, Lakeland, FL 33811. The training will last from approximately 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day.

Portion of Chestnut Road to Close For Sidewalk Project

Polk County Roads & Drainage Division will start the initial phase of a sidewalk installation project near Lakeland on December 18, 2023, along North Chestnut Road from Butler Drive to south of Yeats Street. Construction will also include drainage improvements that will close a portion of North Chestnut Road at Butler Drive because of the narrow right-of-way and the need for deep drainage structures as part of the project.

Five Points Roundabout Construction Has Begun

The Five Points Roundabout construction project started on October 23, 2023. The intersection at West Main Street, West Lemon Street and Sloan Avenue are temporarily closed while the signalized intersection is converted to a single lane roundabout. The $2.2M project, funded by the City of Lakeland will take approximately nine months to complete. The work is being done by Gibbs & Register, a company that specializes in complex construction projects.
