City addresses housing, facilitating projects

The CITY OF STURGEON BAY has made development of affordable housing a priority for Door County's workforce, and its efforts are taking shape.

Following the completion of 29 multiple-family rental units in 2022, there are currently 224 units under construction or recently completed in Sturgeon Bay, including the Peninsula Apartments (pictured above) near the Target store.

City of Sturgeon Bay officials have also approved a workforce housing subdivision of 24 single-family homes off of South Hudson Avenue.

All told, there are 550 housing developments in Sturgeon Bay that were recently built, are currently under construction, have been approved by the city for construction, or are in the planning stages for construction since 2022.

VISIT FROM U.S. SENATOR TAMMY BALDWIN

Roundtable held on economic challenges

DCEDC was proud to moderate a roundtable on vital economic development issues with U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and regional staff at the Door County Maritime Museum recently. DCEDC staff and board members, as well partners throughout the county, discussed issues such as workforce development, housing attainability, childcare affordability, and broadband access.

Senator Baldwin stopped in Door County as part of her Northeast Wisconsin tour, learning about how communities are approaching economic development challenges and discussing ways in which the federal government can be a partner in providing solutions.

DOOR COUNTY CANDLE COMPANY

“There are a lot of great things about starting a business or growing a business in Door County. One, it’s a beautiful area and it’s a destination spot. Two, the community support is amazing."

-Christiana Trapani

Trapanis 'proud' to run a Door County business

The moment you exit your vehicle at DOOR COUNTY CANDLE COMPANY, the scents of sweet fragrances fill the air.

“It’s funny because customers come into the store all of the time and tell us that they were leaving the coffee shop nearby or they were pulling into our lot and they smell the candles,” said owner Christiana Trapani. “They’re like, ‘Wow!’ It’s kind of cool. It’s like we have this natural fan of scents just to bring people into our shop.”

Christiana and her husband Nic are young, hard-working entrepreneurs who love operating a business in Door County. The Trapanis purchased Door County Candle Company in Carlsville in June of 2021 and in two short years they’ve increased sales “threefold,” added a much-needed 3,000-square-foot warehouse to their retail store and production facility, and have plans to build an 8,000-square-foot addition in the near future.

Christiana came upon the business opportunity while running her own e-commerce gift-box business called Door County Delivered, which she still operates today.
