Be Wise/Act Wise

Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life

and is characterized by getting along with others.

It is gentle and reasonable,

overflowing with mercy and blessings,

not hot one day and cold the next,

not two-faced.

You can develop a healthy, robust community

that lives right with God

and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other,

treating each other with dignity and honor.

James 3:17-18 (MSG)

Sunday Study Session: Our Common Purpose

October 6th, 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon

with Richard Gilman

Richard Gilman will help us understand what divides us and what we might do about it in a talk after worship service on October 6th

Making nice to our adversaries certainly doesn’t hurt. Real progress, however, will require some deeper work. We can begin by better dealing with the pluralism of cherished values, theirs and ours, that often end up in direct contention with each other.

Gilman, a newspaperman who now styles himself as a public-policy geek, has been seeking to illuminate our nation’s common purpose since Barack Obama issued just that challenge as he left office in 2017. His non-partisan findings are based on years of his own nationwide public opinion polling.

Pastor Michael will introduce the session with a brief Biblical reflection on the spiritual idea of unity. Richard Gilman will share his work with us, and then we will have opportunity for conversation.

As always, we offer these sessions in hybrid format. Please indicate if you are joining us in-person or via Zoom when you sign up, click here.

Neighbors in Need

Special Mission Offering

Neighbors in Need (NiN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion in the United States.

In 2024, the NiN theme is Mental Health Justice For All! This year’s focus is on Mental Health Justice. In 2015, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ passed a resolution to become WISE (Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive, and Engaged) for mental health.

A just world for all is a world where the human rights and well-being of people with mental health challenges are respected, no matter who you are or where you are in life’s mental health journey.

As you may recall, one-third of the offering supports Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds are used by Justice and Witness Ministries to provide grants to UCC churches and organizations as well as supporting a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects.

Donate online here. Write in "NiN" (Using PayPal costs us about 3% of your donation)

or donate by check: drop in the Sunday offering or mail it to the church and be sure to add a memo that it is for NiN.

We thank you for your support and generosity.

Please Save Empty Prescription Pill Bottles

The Primavera Foundation continues to be in need of empty prescription pill bottles (with labels and glue removed) so they can be filled with personal care essentials for folks at the Primavera Homeless Intervention and Prevention Drop-In Center. Please deliver your prescription pill bottles to the small basket on the table in the narthex. Thank you for removing the labels and glue and recycling your empty pill bottles. Glue may be removed by rubbing olive oil on the glue and rinsing with soapy water or by using the commercial product Goo Gone.

Library Books Available

A cart of books from our Mason Memorial Library is in the courtyard most Sunday mornings. Check it out, grab a book or peruse the Library, open after service. Stop by and say ‘Hi’ to Syd Teague or our other Librarians, who can answer any of your Library questions.

Also available at the Sunday Library cart are fabric bookmarks made by Compassion on the Border. These bookmarks make great gifts and all sales go toward humanitarian aid for migrants.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body
