Spotlight On: Ben Austen, Author of Correction, at Boswell Book Co.

Community Advocates Public Policy Institute and Boswell Book Company will host Ben Austen, author of Correction: Parole, Prison, and the Possibility of Change, who will be in conversation with Elly Fishman, UWM professor and author of Refugee High: Coming of Age in America.
Correction, an investigation into the crisis of the American criminal justice system through the lens of parole, has generated rave reviews from The New York Times, Washington Post, and Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted, who wrote, "Correction ranks among the very best books on life inside and outside of prison I have ever read."
This event will be held at Boswell Book Company, 2559 N. Downer Ave., Milwaukee, on Tuesday, January 23, at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend; click the link below to reserve your spot.

Affordable Connectivity Program Outreach Events Wednesday, January 24 and Thursday, January 25 | |
If you’re having trouble paying for Internet services, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) can help you. The ACP offers eligible households $30 a month discount on Internet service. Community Advocates Public Policy Institute is getting the word out about this program and helping folks get signed up.

Indian Health Service Community Opioid Intervention Prevention Program
Applications Due by February 7

The Indian Health Service is offering funding to address the opioid crisis in American Indian/ Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. The objectives for this program include increasing public awareness and education about culturally appropriate and family-centered opioid and overdose prevention and treatment, increasing access to medication-assisted treatment/medications for opioid use disorder, and promoting harm reduction activities in tribal and urban Indian communities. Eligible applicants include federally recognized tribes, tribal organizations, and urban Indian organizations.

Gambling Awareness Grant Opportunity
Applications Due by March 14

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services' Care and Treatment Services Division is seeking applicants for a new gambling awareness grant program.
The recipient must develop and provide a contemporary educational awareness campaign in multimedia formats on gambling disorder for multiple audiences, promote evidence-based prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery of gambling disorder for multiple audiences through trainings, promote early identification and appropriate referrals for individuals at risk for or exhibiting behavioral attributes of gambling disorder, and maintain a twenty-four hour hotline. The deadline to apply is March 14.

The Association of Medical Colleges and The National Institute on Drug Abuse will host a webinar on Wednesday, January 17, at 12 p.m. This webinar will cover the state of the substance misuse epidemic, the results of a recently commissioned literature review on stigma toward substance misuse, and updates on several national educational efforts to improve health care.

The Southeast PTTC will host this free interactive session, with presenters Carlton Hall and Stephanie Strutner demonstrating the importance of communication for community coalitions.
Participants will identify the importance of effective communication while engaging in hands-on learning, developing effective techniques to reach specific populations of focus in their community. Participants will further reflect on how to effectively market their strategies to be effective in achieving population-level change. Recovery and Resiliency Forum
Part I: Trauma Responsive Practices

This workshop, led by trauma researcher James "Dimitri" Topitzes, will explore the many definitions and forms of trauma and the potential short- and long-term reactions to trauma exposure. There will be a discussion on what happens if trauma persists over time and how one may overcome negative trauma effects, as well as what this means for professionals serving trauma-affected communities and their members.
This event, organized by Wisconsin Community Services, will be held on Tuesday, January 23, from 9 to 11 a.m. This event is free and reserving a spot in advance is highly encouraged.

The National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors will host a webinar on the critical role that both peers and recovery professionals play as allies to those in recovery, with author Alison Jones Webb there to discuss her work in harm reduction and to educate attendees about the importance of recovery capital.

Community Advocates Public Policy Institute's Mental Health First Aid webinar teaches attendees how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training provides the skills needed to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to appropriate care.

HEART (Healing Ethno And Racial Trauma) Training for Behavioral Health Providers Serving Latinx Communities

The Collective for Antiracist Child and Family Systems and the Great Lakes MHTTC are collaborating to conduct a HEART (Healing Ethno And Racial Trauma) training for behavioral health professionals serving Hispanic and Latinx communities in HHS Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin).
Developed by Hector Y. Adames, PsyD and Nayeli Y. Chavez-Dueñas, PhD, the HEART framework uses culturally based healing modalities to promote self-determination, increase resilience, and strengthen healthy coping skills for POCI individuals experiencing ethno-racial-trauma caused by systemic oppression. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 26.

This webinar will explore changes in drug use trends in the Great Lakes region and how prevention professionals can integrate the new and evolving data into their existing prevention work. The most up-to-date information on trends in alcohol, cannabis, opioid, and other drug use in the Great Lakes region will be presented. Additionally, attendees will discuss how these changes may impact everything from the existing priorities, strategies, data needs, and partnerships.

Black Men in White Coats Documentary Screening

On Saturday, February 24, the Marcus Performing Arts Center will be host a screening of Black Men in White Coats, a new documentary about Black men in medicine. Only 2% of the United States' doctors are Black men, and this film examines the barriers that prevent Black men from entering a career in medicine and how this lack of inclusion can have negative consequences for society at large.
This screening will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Marcus Performing Arts Center's Vogel Hall at 929 N. Water St., Milwaukee. This event is free and attendees are strongly encouraged to reserve tickets in advance.
