Alliance of Associate Conference Ministers

November 28 - December 1 our Michigan Conference Associate Conference Ministers were able to participate in the Annual Retreat for the Alliance of Associate Conference Ministers #AACM

Rev Cheryl Burke and Rev Calandra Nevenzel were able to network, worship, learn, sabbath, and recharge at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Arizona.

What a joy for them to be able to connect with those across the denomination who do similar work, and to share ideas and wisdom for supporting our local churches. We are so grateful for the work these two do and so fortunate to have them on our staff!!

What do you know about PSLF?

In my role as Director of Communications, one of my FAVORITE jobs is to help share resources with our pastors and local churches. Connecting folks with what they need to feel supported and successful is the best!! I am looking forward to the continued expansion of my role, and making time to be able to dig into creating efficient ways to share resources that are easily accessible to you via the Conference Website - stay tuned...

To be honest, I didn't know very much about (PSLF) Public Service Loan Forgiveness, but it is a topic that we have received questions about at the Conference, so we've been looking into it for you.

To qualify for PSLF, you must

Many of our clergy find themselves in a space where they meet these requirements and are working through the process. Some are finding the application process long and tedious, and we have found a common thread in "qualifying not-for-profit organization"

After conferring with Heather Kimmel, legal council for the National Setting, it is helpful to clarify that the PSLF database is incomplete, especially as it relates to religious employers. We also concur hearing that the lack of movement on the part of the government contractor who is running PSLF is frustrating, but here are some recommendations for getting your local church employer cleared as a qualifying not-for-profit organization.

* Enter employer’s information manually, as accurately as possible.

* This is the EIN of the employer (local church) NOT the denomination’s EIN

Even with this information, because of the incomplete database, your employer (local church) will likely undergo a manual review process.

* You will probably need to include supporting documentation

* You may also need to include a group exemption letter. An updated group exemption letter and supporting materials can be requested by emailing the paralegal at the National Setting gaffneyc@ucc.org

For additional clarification here is more information from the National Setting about Group Exemption, EIN numbers, and tax-exemption for churches

"God remains with us,

Though we let go of our cherished place.

God remains with us,

Though we sing new songs and worship in new ways.

God remains with us,

Though we serve in different ways and pursue different causes.

God remains with us,

Though we find new friends in our new congregation..."

“Using My Voice: A Journey of Progressive Christianity and Social Activism"

Grand Rapids resident, Betsy Greensmith Dole, is releasing her first book in time for her 92nd birthday on November 17, 2023.

Her memoir takes readers on a profound voyage through her transformative path towards self-discovery and empowerment. This memoir is an inspirational example of how one woman's voice can drive positive change, emphasizing inclusivity, justice, and community support. Betsy’s life journey reflects the evolving landscape of the Christian church, focusing on behaviors over beliefs, and highlights the profound impact of supportive like-minded friends and family in shaping individual growth. It underscores the contributions of the unsung heroes whose contributions make our communities stronger. Betsy’s life is a testament the courage it takes to share one’s own experience while actively listening to the stories of others.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to UCOM and to the New Waves UCC housing project. For media inquiries, author interviews, or review copies, please contact: peggy.dolane@gmail.com

Government Incentives for Churches to Lower Electrical Bills and Reduce Fossil Fuel Use

Churches can reduce fossil fuel use by making the most of government incentives. Churches receive federal money for the purchase of solar panels or heat pumps. Check out the UCC’s new  solar resource page which explains why almost every church would save money by going solar.
