Bipartisan support for Community News & Small Business Support Act grows

A Republican and a Democrat are first co-sponsors


Rep. Andre Carson (D-Indiana) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania) are the first official co-sponsors of the Community News & Small Business Support Act (HR 4756).


Additional co-sponsors are expected to be announced soon.


The Community News & Small Business Support Act was introduced by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-1), both members of the Ways and Means Committee.

Rates for Senior Leadership Conference increase $100 per person next Friday

Registration fees for the 2023 Senior Leadership Conference in Chicago will increase next Friday, Sept. 1. Register now and save $100 per person. This year's conference will be held Oct. 8-10 at The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago.


Rates through Aug. 31 — for newspaper executives — are just $595 for members; non-member rates are $795. 


Solutions Partner members also are encouraged to registered as soon as possible to guarantee your participation in the conference. There are a limited number of total Solutions Partner registrations available at the Senior Leadership Conference.

Gannett names Tom Claybaugh general manager for the Fort Myers News-Press


The News-Press has announced that Tom Claybaugh has been named the general manager in the Fort Myers, Florida, market. In this role, Claybaugh will work closely with the executive editor to strengthen local connection points with businesses and brands to drive community-based strategies and engagement, effective Oct. 1.

Crystal Childers named Duncan Banner publisher


Crystal Childers, general manager of The Duncan (Oklahoma) Banner, has been promoted to publisher of the newspaper.


A Duncan native, Childers joined the Banner in 2013 as an advertising representative. She moved up to advertising department manager in 2017 and to general manager in 2020.

Jake Winfrey, sports editor of The Cullman Times, has been named CNHI’s Alabama group sports editor. Just in time for football season, the newly created position became effective this month.

Matt Hickman named Herald/Review managing editor in Sierra Vista, Arizona


Matt Hickman previously worked for the paper from 1998-2015 as a sports reporter, sports editor and assistant managing editor, during which time he won more than 30 statewide awards, mostly for sports coverage and column writing.

Sally Hampton McMullin, wife of former president of the Inland Press Association, has died


Sally Hampton McMullin passed away peacefully in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Aug. 17, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Norman McMullin, a past president of the Inland Press Association.
