Only a portion of the prayer is sung in this setting, however here is a translation of the full prayer:
Grant peace, goodness and blessing, grace, kindness and compassion to us and to all Your people Israel. Bless us, all of us as one, with the light of Your countenance, for by the light of Your countenance did You give us, Adonai our God, the Torah of life and love of kindness, justice, blessing, mercy, life and peace.
And may You see fit, to bless your people Israel, at all times and in every hour with Your peace.
Blessed are You, Adonai; who blesses Your people Israel with peace.
This setting of Sim Shalom is included in one of the music books in my bookcase that I refer to regularly, and somehow I never took notice of it. Ok, this compendium has over 1000 pages…. if only there were even more hours in the day!
I’ve never even heard this setting before, which confuses me, as it seems to be quite popular! I think it's lovely. So is the voice of Nancy Linder. I think you can agree that her voice is beautiful, her delivery is poised and her Hebrew diction is spot on. Ahhhhh.
The melody is attributed to Anonymous. Whenever I see that, my mind immediately wanders to fill in an imaginary story of the creation of the song and its composer. Then I usually finish my fanciful history of “music with anonymous composers” with a short tale as to how, no matter how splendid the time-tested melody is, the recognition of the composer becomes lost to history. I can be quite creative; no two of these stories are the same.
I reached out to Nancy Linder and upon request she graciously sent me this short bio:
