Recap of the Week

Parental and community involvement are vital to your student’s academic success. Can you believe that our Jets have already completed their first two weeks of learning? We have faced some challenges including 30/30s, a shortage of laptops, and a shortage of laptop chargers. We are doing everything we can to get a device to your student as soon as possible. One way you can assist in speeding this process is by paying any outstanding fines your student may have. See the OCPS Fee Structure here.

Parents, I am asking for grace from all of you. The Legacy Middle School mission is to ensure that every student has a promising and successful future, and our vision is that with the support of our families and the community, we will create enriching and diverse pathways that lead our students to success.

When people speak and/or behave in a manner that is disrespectful to our front desk staff, our staff that assists with getting your students safely on and off buses, to their bikes and the car-rider area, or any other Legacy staff, our community is put at risk. This includes your student(s). The Orange County Public Schools Code of Civility has four basic tenants:

1) Always treat each other with courtesy and respect
2) Treat each other with kindness
3) Take responsibility for our own actions
4) Cooperate with each other

Sincerely,

Jason Jiménez

Did You Know???
The use of Collaborative Learning strategy at Legacy Middle:
Collaborative learning (also known as cooperative learning) can occur with small groups, large groups or peer-to-peer. Peer learning and instruction have many benefits, including higher-level thinking, communication skills, self-regulation and leadership skills. Cornell University’s Center for Teaching Innovation explains, “Similar to the idea that two or three heads are better than one, educational researchers have found that through peer instruction, students teach each other by addressing misunderstandings and clarifying misconceptions.” Collaboration with others is seen daily in Legacy Middle School classrooms (read more about the benefits of this practice here).

As an example of Collaborative Learning at Legacy, Ms. Osmary (Drama teacher) had students apply the concepts of collaboration in two different activities: the "Marshmallow Challenge" and "Walk in Our Shoes."

The first challenge involved students working in small groups with time (20 minutes) and supply restrictions (spaghetti, tape, marshmallows, and string) to build the tallest structure possible.

The second activity had students designing a pair of shoes that represent them, and while creating their shoes, structured small and whole group discussions took place analyzing what it means to walk in another person’s shoes.

Tony Ulivella and Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake
Hello Legacy Middle Jets!

My name is Tony Ulivella and I am the Nature Program Specialist for Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. I develop and facilitate nature-based programming for our local community, coordinate the care for our farm and the animals that live there, as well as work with outside organizations to support a variety of volunteer events. I have been with Bill Frederick Park for almost a year, but have been a lover of nature for the majority of my life. I strive to educate our communities, both near and far, about the beauty the natural world has to offer and how we all play a part in its ever-shifting balance.

Please let Tony know you are interested in a visit: antonio.ulivella@orlando.gov

We thank Tony and his team for the "Snack Room" they provided during our pre-planning week before school started!

Monday's Motivational Moment!
THE POWER OF CIVILITY IN GETTING THINGS DONE
With the pressures of rising prices and back to school shopping which affects so many families, a string of severe weather student dismissal delays, the learning of new procedures at the start of a school year, plus the normal challenges that come with raising children, one can can understand how at times we might see a loss of civility in day-to-day interactions. However, the value that comes from courtesy and politeness in getting problems resolved is quite powerful.

Former White House social secretaries Lea Berman and Jeremy Bernard teamed up to make the case for respect. In their book "Treating People Well: The Extraordinary Power of Civility at Work and in Life," Berman and Bernard contend that what they learned about achieving goals with integrity at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is applicable to all of us every day.

Their tips:

Be prepared. Minding little details shows you care about others. Here at school this could be as simple as being respectful enough to follow the student drop off and pick up procedures.

Use levity. Humor when you have been waiting for a lightning storm to pass over or waiting on your student's computer laptop & charger to arrive can be tricky. The best way is to not target or lash out at someone else who is just trying to do their job, but to use a little self-depreciation on yourself. A little self-depreciation once in a while shows people that you are secure enough to make fun of yourself and don't take yourself too seriously while at the same time recognizing that we have a difficult situation in play.

Listen actively. It really is important to be "in the moment" and truly listen to what the other person is saying so that you don't make matters worse. Active listening sends the signal that you are invested in solutions for the good of yourself, your student, and our school.

Use tact with honesty. Telling the truth is obviously a virtue. But if stating a truth is hurtful and doesn't yield anything positive, it's probably best to say nothing.

Today is Monday and we kick off a new school week. Our Legacy teachers will be on campus set to give each one of our Jets their very best. If you are visiting the middle school this week and should find yourself getting a little impatient over a specific matter, please consider the above and perhaps a little advice from Mr. Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" fame (a popular children's TV show that ran for many years):

Fred Rogers On Being Thoughtful
There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.
~ Fred Rogers, TV host

Thank you for reading and thank you very much for your civility. It is appreciated. Have a good Monday!
