Parish Newsletter December 2023

Message From Father Angi

In this digital age in which we are living, we are acutely aware of the need for vigilance. Media reports frequently call attention to businesses whose data has been compromised. There are vigorous exhortations about being alert to the ways in which we are using electronic means of communication, and the inherent dangers that may arise if vigilance is not sustained. The mention of our data being consigned to ‘the dark web’ foreshadows anxiety.

In addition to exercising the quality of vigilance in the use of electronic devices, warnings appear around caring for our physical, mental, and emotional health and being alert to the many factors that affect life-giving decisions. The attribute of vigilance affects decision making in all aspects of our lives: health, business, economics, relationships, and spirituality.

In the area of vigilance, there was a house of worship safety presentation by Officer Shawn George of the Cincinnati Police Department on Thursday afternoon, November 30. The staffs of the St. Gregory Family of Parishes were invited as well as ushers and greeters to name a few who encounter individuals as they enter our churches. The invitation was also extended to the parishes in our Deanery. In this day and age, we have to be vigilant. In our gospel for this first Sunday of Advent, Jesus calls us to be vigilant because we never know when the Lord will return. In another gospel, Jesus advises us to stay vigilant because we never know the day or the hour. We pray that the Lord will keep us vigilant in all areas of our lives so we do not become complacent.

Sincerely,

Fr. Steve

Together We Gave

Thank you for supporting Guardian Angels on Giving Tuesday. We are so grateful for the support of this community!

Cookies at Christmas

We are collecting home baked cookies for the inmates and officers at the Hamilton County Justice Center as a small way of sharing the love of Christ with inmates and staff working in the corrections facilities served by the Transforming Jail Ministries chaplains. No visitors are allowed on Christmas day, so this may be all the prisoners receive.

Please leave cookies at the IHM Welcome Center, GA office and St. John Fisher office by noon on Wednesday Dec. 20th. For details, click here.

Congratulations to Our New Servers!

Congratulations to our newest 5th, 6th, and 7th grade servers. They trained with our head servers in September and October and are doing a wonderful job serving! Welcome to Mary Camden, Vivian Emrick, Audrey Linz, Jude Sebranek, Henry Schmidt, Kelsey Slaughter, Owen Spiller, AJ Stewart, and Vivian Zoz. Welcome to these young men and women as they serve in this very important ministry in the Church!

Great news for anyone who pays Ohio income tax and supports Guardian Angels

We have many students at Guardian Angels who benefit from scholarships provided by the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF). Ohio taxpayers who donate to the CEF may be able to claim a dollar-for-dollar, non-refundable tax credit on their state income tax return, up to $750 per donor. For more information, click here.

We hope you consider a donation before the end of the year and choose "Guardian Angels School (Cincinnati)(C00160)" from the drop-down when prompted.

Parishioner and tax expert, Brien Dulle, is donating. Here's what he had to say. "Supporting the CEF is a no-brainer for me for two reasons. As a graduate of GA that is also sending my daughters to the school, I want to invest in the education that our children receive. Secondly, there's no extra money out of pocket since I can claim a dollar-for-dollar Ohio tax credit."

Congratulations to Our New Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion

Congratulations to many of our 8th grade students who have answered the call to serve as Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion! They are committed to sharing the Body of Christ with their peers. Welcome to Athena Andreadis, Nora Braukman, Frankie Colonna, Gianna Conover, Gabby Earley, Henry Froehlich, Mia Haddad, Moira Kapp, Oscar MacVeigh, Hugh McElroy, Liam Necessary, Max Orlando, Charlotte Rettig, Liza Ritze, Bo Schneider, Josie Skie, Nora Sebranek, and Ben Stautberg.

Beautifying Our Church Update

Phase 1 of our Church beautification and renewal project — LED lighting, statue restoration, and Stations of the Cross — is complete and we hope you like the results. We are working to finalize Phase 2 plans for new pews, flooring, and painting currently planned for June-July 2024.

One recurring question our committee has been asked is “do the pews really need to be replaced?” We want to share some information with you about our pews. The current pews are almost 60 years old and were originally installed in the undercroft which served as the Sanctuary starting in the mid-1960s. The pews were moved upstairs in late 1970s when the current Sanctuary was finally completed. Our pews are not solid wood — they are wood veneer — which has been nicked, chipped, scratched, and cracked during six decades of use. Trim pieces have fallen off and book and envelope holders have been damaged. Many of the rubber footers for the kneelers have disappeared, some kneeler coverings are cracked, and the kneeler frames regularly come loose from the pew body. Some kneelers have been reinstalled so many times they are now crooked. Most importantly, over the last few years at least three of the pew bodies have split, requiring significant repairs.

These conditions will only continue to worsen with pews that have long outlived their expected lifespan. We have obtained a bid to refurbish the pews and the kneelers; however, the estimate was as high as the cost of installing all new pews and kneelers!

Installing new pews with quiet kneelers will help enhance our worship experience. This along with the new flooring and HVAC upgrades will also improve safety and access by increasing the width of some aisles, as well as incorporating standardized pew spacing. The combination of Phase 1 — lighting, Stations, and statue restoration — along with Phase 2 – painting, flooring, and pews — will provide a high-quality place to worship our Lord for current parishioners and leave a legacy for future parishioners.

Thank you for all your thoughts and encouragement to date. We welcome your comments and suggestions at our email address: chbeauty@gaparish.org.

Greeters and Gift Bearers

Greeters and gift bearers are needed for all 3 weekend Masses and Christmas Masses. This is a wonderful way for your family to participate in the liturgy. Bringing forth the gifts of bread and wine symbolize our collective offering to God as a congregation. Signing up in advance ensures that we have coverage and don't need to reach out to families at the last minute before Mass begins. Click here to volunteer. Thank you for your help!

Contact Kay Froehlich (513-624-3146/ kfroehlich@gaparish.org) for more information on any Religious Education program.

2024-2025 Enrollment

Enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year will open for parish families on December 11th. You'll find all the information you need on the school website.

If you missed our Information Sessions but would still like to learn more about our school, we invite you to take a personal tour. A tour allows you to meet with our administration to discuss the classes and programs available through GA and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. These are typically done during school hours so you can see what a typical day is like for students. Call the school office at (513)624-3141 to schedule a tour.

School Playground Hours

We want to remind everyone of the hours of operation for our newer playground equipment. The portion of the playground that was installed last year sits outside the area where our old equipment sat. Since it is outside the mulch area and is now closer to other property lines, the portion of the equipment with the slide CANNOT be used outside of the posted playground operating hours. Those hours are 8:00am-6:00pm.
