Webinar on child-responsive NAPs and NDC 3.0

On 16 July, RCC WAC Africa organized a webinar on child-responsive national adaptation plans (NAPs) and nationally determined contributions (NDC) 3.0, in collaboration with the UNICEF Regional Office for West and Central Africa.

The event provided West and Central African Parties with guidance on how to formulate child-responsive climate policies and strategies, especially in the new round of NDC (NDC 3.0): it convened a total of 65 participants, including National ACE Focal Points, NDC Coordinators, and children and youth.

Validation workshop for Togo’s action plan on green entrepreneurship and financing

On 23 July, RCC WAC Africa attended the validation workshop organized by UNDP, which aimed to review Togo’s action plan on green entrepreneurship and financing.

During the discussions, RCC WAC Africa shared information on NDCs and resources such as the UNFCCC Climate Finance Decision Booklet or the 2030 Climate Solutions Implementation road map, and discussed how this action plan can effectively contribute to the development of the country’s NDC 3.0.

Regional workshop on the process of establishing a carbon market in West Africa

In early August, RCC WAC Africa took part in a workshop seeking to validate research on the region's involvement in the carbon market carried out by the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).


More than 50 participants attended the event, representing the private sector, regional organizations, and ECOWAS member States.


RCC WAC Africa gave a presentation on initiatives to assist countries in operationalizing Article 6 in the region.

Climate migration and its challenges to Legal frameworks

On 8 August, the RCC WAC Africa participated and provided remarks in a webinar facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Regional Office for West and Central Africa, where the Network of Legal Experts on Migration in West and Central Africa (NoLEM), Georgetown University Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM), and other stakeholders discussed the challenges posed by climate migration and its impacts on the legal frameworks governing international migration.

Parliamentary Days on climate change in the Republic of Congo

RCC WAC Africa participated in the 2024’s parliamentary Days on climate change on the role of Parliamentarians in strengthening climate action in Central Africa in the Republic of Congo, The meeting was an intitiave of the Parliament of the Republic of Congo.

RCC WAC Africa gave two presentations to over 80 participants on i) The international climate negotiations: the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement; and ii) the issues at stake at the upcoming global climate change conference COP29, and the challenges relating to the implementation of Article 6 (Carbon Market) and Carbon Pricing.


The event was supported by the Regional Hub for Climate Action the ECCAS Commission, the African Group of Experts in Support of Negotiations (AGNES), the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

Learning session on carbon markets

On 16 August, RCC WAC Africa organized a 1-hour online dedicated learning session on carbon markets for experts in the UNICEF country offices located in Africa (but also elsewhere).

This allowed participants to learn from RCC WAC Africa's experience and reflect on how the Article 6 of the Paris Agreement works. The discussion also explored the participation requirements for carbon markets and the opportunities offered by Article 6 relating to greenhouse gas emission reductions and climate finance.

Forty-sixth meeting of

the Least Developed Countries Expert Group

RCC WAC Africa welcomed its Regional Adaptation Specialist, who immediately hit the ground running and supported the Forty-Sixth Meeting of the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 19 to 22 August.


LEG 46 focused on i) Reviewing the group's work and activities since LEG 45; ii) Updating the NAP technical guidelines; iii) Organizing the NAP Expo 2025; and iv) Discussing stakeholders' efforts and commitments to ensure that all LDCs have their NAPs by 2025. 


Organized twice a year by the UN Climate Change Secretariat, the event convened members of the LEG, the Chair of the LDCs, the Ethiopian Ministry of Planning and Development, and representatives from UN agencies, including FAO, UNDP, UNEP, WMO, UNESCO, GEF, GCF and UNECA.

Learning session on gender-responsive climate plans

A webinar on the integration of gender into long-term low emission development strategies (LT-LEDS) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) took place on 22 August.


The event counted 65 participants, including the UNFCCC national focal points, NDCs and LT-LEDS Coordinators and the National gender and climate change focal points from the region to reflect on the possible ways to integrate gender perspectives into the NDCs and LT-LEDS.


The event was organized by RCC WAC Africa in close collaboration with UN Women West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO).

Survey on youth engagement on NDCs and NAPs in West and Central Africa

RCC WAC Africa is conducting a survey to collect information dedicated to a study on youth voices within the NDCs and NAPs processes in West and Central Africa.

The study seeks to better inform countries, non-Party Stakeholders and other partners of the region as countries are formulating their next NDCs and NAPs.

Technical experts workshop on transparency in Brazzaville, Congo

In late August, RCC WAC Africa delivered a presentation on the recent analysis of the LT-LEDS landscape in Africa and the draft technical guide for LT-LEDS development at a technical expert workshop on NDC tracking and transparency in Brazzaville, Congo.

This work was commissioned by AGNES and the UN Climate Change Regional Collaboration Centres in Africa.

Future Energy Conference 2024 in Accra, Ghana

RCC WAC Africa also participated in the Future Energy Conference 2024 in Accra, Ghana.

Organized by the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), this year’s conference gathered over 500 participants across Africa under the theme ‘Harnessing Africa’s Resource Wealth: Fueling Innovation for Equitable Energy Access’.


RCC WAC Africa took this opportunity to engage with actors, including the private sector, academia and Sustainability Officers, and amplify the UN Climate Change secretariat's messages relating to the energy transition, The Paris Agreement, and The UAE Consensus.

Training session: Climate governance, diplomacy and Negotiation Leadership Program

On 28 August, RCC WAC Africa participated in an online training session to deliver a presentation focusing on the outcomes of the global stocktake and overall state of play under the Paris Agreement for the cohort 16 of the Climate governance, diplomacy and negotiation leadership Program hosted by AGNES.

Workshop on empowering Africa:

fast-tracking biennial transparency reports

RCC WAC Africa supported the preparation of a transparency workshop hosted by the West African Development Bank (BOAD) from 9-11 September 2024.


The workshop was co-organized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and the COP 29 Presidency, with support from the UN Climate Change secretariat and its RCC WAC Africa.

Empowering francophone Africa for climate adaptation finance

For three days in Abidjan, Cote d’ Ivoire, experts and practitioners discussed the unique hurdles faced by Francophone African countries in securing climate adaptation finance and explored potential solutions, underscoring the importance of our collective mission. 


The workshop, a crucial initiative organized by the NDC Partnership, in collaboration with Climate Action Africa, aimed to address these challenges. This workshop was part of a series of six regional capacity-building training sessions on climate adaptation finance, specifically tailored for experts from ministries from Francophone African countries and led by Climate Analytics.

Opportunity to engage

LDC Roster of Experts on NAPs 

As part of its technical guidance and support, the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) decided to create and maintain a roster of national and regional experts from the least developed countries (LDCs) to support the formulation and iterative review of national adaptation plans (NAPs), and the implementation of policies, projects and programmes identified in them.


The LDCs Roster of Experts on NAPs therefore contains information on experts with relevant skills and professional expertise in the field of climate change adaptation to contribute to activities related to the formulation and implementation of NAPs.

The call for expression of interest to join the roster was launched in July 2022 and is open for applications on a continuing basis.

Mapping of relevant sources of finance for climate change adaptation for the least developed countries is now available!

The document provides a charting of relevant sources of finance for adaptation, including sources other than the UNFCCC Financial Mechanism as part of its outreach activities. This information aims to support the LDCs in their efforts to develop and implement national adaptation plans.

This latest policy brief by the UN Climate Change Technology Executive Committee (TEC) explores sustainable urban mobility through a gender lens, highlighting the importance of gender-responsive policies, measures, and practices. The brief underscores the necessity of integrating gender considerations into urban mobility systems to achieve sustainable mobility. It discusses related technologies, infrastructure, and services, while addressing challenges and development options.
