” Help Save AAPI Young Lives”

UCA WAVES is a program of United Chinese Americans (UCA) , a national 501c(3) non-profit organization with the mission to serve, lead and inspire Chinese American communities for active civic engagement.

For seven years and going strong, WAVES programs are made possible by the passion, dedication, and talents of countless volunteers, community partners, foundations, many generous individual donors and supporters across the country.

Please join forces with us and ride the WAVES toward a healthier and stronger community! Your contribution will help improve mental health and save lives.

WHY UCA WAVES

  • Raise awareness of the mental health challenges that young Asian Americans face due to familial, cultural, and societal factors
  • Develop community support and resources to improve youth mental health
  • Promote cultural sensitivity in psychological well-being and interventions
  • Encourage civic engagement in public policies to address mental health issues

UCA WAVES is a youth mental health collaborative that seeks to provide support among Asian American families. Asian American youth often suffer “silently” with stress, social isolation, cultural expectations, identity issues, and low mental health literacy. These are only some of the barriers that stand in the way of getting help. In response, we as a collaborative community are here to stand together and work towards Wellness, Advocacy, Voices, Education, and Support (WAVES).

The Groundbreaking Documentary Film on AAPI Mental Health

Supported by WAVES, Award-winning documentary filmmaker Professor Changfu Chang and his devoted team continued working on Silent War, a documentary shedding light on the mental health crisis in the Asian American community. The Silent War team traveled across the world in the past two years to film, giving Asian Americans a space to tell their stories.

Critical support is needed to complete the project . The full documentary will be previewed July 11-13 at the 4th Chinese American Convention and 2nd National WAVES Summit in DC.

Mental Health First Aid Training

In collaboration with Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities, UCA WAVES team started to provide mental health first aid (MHFA) training to Chinese Americans from 2022!

The Mental Health First Aid Training Program aims to educate community members about mental health and boost their ability to prevent or handle crises, allowing them to become "mental health guardians" for themselves and their loved ones.

So far in 2023, a total of 515 people from 28 states registered. 182 people completed training and became Mental Health First Aiders!!

MHFA training in Durham, North Carolina.

MHFA training in Oregon.

Peer Support Group

WAVES Village set up the first Closed Peer Support Group in September. The group of fifteen people included two co-facilitators, three facilitators-in-training, and ten WAVES Village volunteers from around the country.

Group members shared stories about the paths that led them to become active learners and volunteers in the mental health space.

All members felt strong connection, empowerment and gratitude.

There are vast unmet needs for mental health support in our communities. The experience from running the current closed group will help us establish a solid foundation for future support groups as we continue to engage, empower, and connect more community members.
