Los Angeles Rams 27, San Francisco 49ers 24

After a 14-0, then 21-7 start, with great plays by "Mr. Clutch," Jauan Jennings, the 49ers' lead slowly but steadily dissipated in the second half. Brock Purdy ended the day connecting on 22-of-30 passes for 292 yards, three touchdowns with some great scrambles, and a quarterback rating of 137.1, and Jauan was truly impressive, but San Francisco could not compensate for multiple injuries to star players, a key dropped pass and a missed field goal, and L.A.  outsmarted the Niners' defense as it whittled away the 21-7 lead in the second half to take the win, 27-24.

Golden State Warriors -- Under the Radar

Television B-Ball sports talk is dominated by predictions of championships for every team ... except Golden State. I take that as a positive. The panels of experts have been so consistently and wrongly unanimous in all their Football picks, (0-for-6 is the general rule), their lack of inclusion of the Dubs is akin to their consistent failures to mention Brock Purdy as a top-rated QB. Brock who?

Steve Kerr? What has he done lately? Oh yeah, that Olympics Gold Medal with a certain Steph Curry's historic performance before a worldwide audience. And now? A Klay-less team hurts, and who can ever fill his shoes? The main figure to try has the initials JK, as in Jonathan Kuminga, a potential superstar. A tremendous leaper who can shoot 3's, JK is ready to emerge. Most of the "experts" are not in on that news, but will soon be on the JK bandwagon with a chorus of "I told you about him."

Watch out for potential new contributors like Buddy Hield, Gui Santos, Daeqwon Plowden, De'Anthony Melton, Pat Spencer and even "The Dutch Master," Quenten Post, our 7'0", 24-year-old draft pick. Add stalwarts Draymond, Looney, Two-Way Wiggs, Podziemski, Moses Moody, Jackson-Davis and GP II, and you have a rough and tumble, experienced, energized squad ready to rumble with any opponent.

Meanwhile, the less we hear from the self-professed experts, the better.

Las Vegas A's?

Oscar Goodman was the mayor of Las Vegas from 1999 to 2011. His wife, Carolyn Goodman, succeeded him as mayor in 2011

A's Vegas

Moving Plan

A Risky Bet

by Dave Newhouse

This is the week the A’s play their final home games in Oakland, the team's residence through championships and chaos since 1968.

Leaving Oakland is their plan — first to Sacramento, then on to Las Vegas -- but are they really wanted in Nevada, where they’ve created more chaos?

“Las Vegas is ready for baseball, but we’re not going to get crazy over the A’s,” said Oscar Goodman, a former Las Vegas mayor. “Unless they do the right thing here, I’ll never be an A’s fan.”

Doing the right thing has been the A’s failure in Las Vegas, where they are bumbling along in their quest to move to the desert, creating more questions than answers in their undefined moving blueprint.

“This isn’t even a winning team, with a horrible record,” said Carolyn Goodman, another former Las Vegas mayor and Oscar’s wife. “You’ve got to fill that stadium 81 times? Good luck.”

Las Vegas hasn’t exactly spread out a welcoming carpet for the A’s arrival three or four years down the road after a Sacramento stopover. A’s owner John Fisher and team president David Kaval haven’t won over Pokertown. Just the opposite.

The Goodmans, who succeeded each other as mayor, joined other Nevadans in picking out an ideal ballpark site for the A’s — 57 acres on the north side of the city alongside two freeways. But the A’s instead picked a nine-acre downtown site by the Tropicana casino, which is decidedly small by Major League Baseball standards and devoid of parking spaces.

“A downtown park is so stupid, I’d never support this club. They never even looked at the other site,” said Oscar. “They could bring a team here, but they better have a first-class ball club. Las Vegas loves a winner, and only winners survive here. You don’t get a second chance in Las Vegas for failure.”

Are you listening, Raiders? With the tremendous success of the city’s hockey and women’s basketball teams, Las Vegas doesn’t take to losers, especially those giving the city, it feels, the cold shoulder.

An Oakland Athletics rendering of their planned 33,000-seat

ballpark in Las Vegas

“They should have listened to Carolyn (about the north Las Vegas site),” said Oscar. “They’re arrogant. We’ll see what happens….but we’ve got all these other sports, and they’ve listened to the mayors.”

“Without Oscar, we wouldn’t have (professional) sports here,” said Carolyn. “From Day One when he became mayor, the passion was there to take a city and move it into a world-class culture. So we needed major-league sports, and Oscar got on the phone with all the commissioners.”

The response has been favorable so far; the NBA expects to have an expansion team in Las Vegas this decade. But the Goodmans feel some sympathy for Oakland.

“Residents of Oakland called and said, ‘Don’t take the A’s. You already have the Warriors,’ ‘’ Carolyn recalled of her mayoralty. “Oakland doesn’t want to lose another team. The current mayor (Sheng Thao) said she’s trying to keep the A’s.”

That’s debatable in the hearts of devoted A’s fans, who feel that Oakland’s politicians haven't tried hard enough to save their sports teams.

Oscar Goodman served as Las Vegas mayor from 1999-2011, and Carolyn from 2011-2024. But they’re “not part of the conversation,” Carolyn pointed out, in baseball negotiations between current Nevada governor Joe Lombardo and Fisher.

Las Vegas plans to have a domed stadium built for the A’s, but, once again, there are no definitive plans in place. As for Las Vegas summertime 100-degree baseball weather in an open-air ballpark?

“It’s not suitable for a human being,” said Oscar. ‘It’s best to stay inside.”

Inside a home, office or casino — anywhere but a ballpark in July. That’s part of the fight ahead for the A’s, unless their long-range moving concept blows up. Who can say? With Fisher and Kaval, they could always roll snake eyes.

The Very First Oakland Coliseum at Bat

by Andy Dolich

During my years with the A’s (1980-1994) I collected a number of

items. Fifty-six years of A’s baseball at the Coliseum will come to an

end on September 26th. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite pieces of

Oakland A’s Memorabilia in the pages of USG’s Sports Today.

Athletics fans have been the beneficiaries of batted balls from some of Baseball’s greatest homers. Mr. October was baseball’s long ball king from those early years in Oakland. The Bash Brothers, also known as Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, deposited many titanic blasts into the far reaches of the Coliseum.

This is a commemorative bat from the first A’s game at the Coliseum on April 17, 1968 when the A’s hosted the Orioles. If you forgot,

the A’s lost 4-1 in front of 50,000 fans.

Earthquakes 1, St. Louis City SC 2

San Jose’s comeback bid falls just short; Quakes travel to Canada to face CF Montréal

next Saturday

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to St. Louis CITY SC 2-1 on Saturday night in front of 15,112 fans.

The visitors struck first in the fourth minute when Jannes Horn streaked down the left wing and fed Cedric Teuchert for the quick finish. In the 11th minute, St. Louis was awarded a penalty after video review when San Jose defender Rodrigues appeared to collide with Marcel Hartel in the box. Two minutes later, Hartel converted from the spot to double the advantage.

The Quakes were undeterred and created two clear chances on goal from Hernán López and Jeremy Ebobisse, but St. Louis goalkeeper Roman Bürki got a hand on both attempts. But Ebobisse would not be denied, and in the 40th minute, he played a one-two with Quakes defender Carlos Akapo and subsequently finished the play with a low left-footed strike to the right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. The half ended 2-1 in favor of St. Louis. San Jose valiantly pushed for an equalizer late but could not get one before the final whistle.

The Quakes now travel to Canada on Saturday, Sept. 28, to face CF Montréal. Kickoff from Stade Saputo will take place at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV (English/Spanish/French), as well as on local radio via AM 810 The Spread (English) and AM 1370 La Kaliente (Spanish).

Oakland Lose Third Straight Game, Falling 2-0 to Hartford

Hartford Athletic opened the scoring against Oakland Roots within the first 20 minutes, with Marlon Hairston finding the net following a period of dominance from the kickoff from the hosts.

Hartford Athletic continued to dominate the rest of the first half and came close to doubling their lead, hitting the post as their closest chance. The half ended with Hartford maintaining their 1-0 lead over Oakland Roots.

Hartford came out aggressively in the second half, which culminated in Jordan Scarlett receiving a red card for a challenge on Oakland's Irakoze Donasiyano. This gave Roots a man advantage moving forward.

Despite having a man advantage and making three substitutions, Oakland Roots couldn't capitalize. Kyle Edwards managed to score against the run of play on a set piece for Hartford Athletic, extending their lead to 2-0.

Oakland battled until the final whistle in Hartford but were unable to find the back of the net, ultimately losing their third consecutive game by a 2-0 scoreline.

Roots will now head home to the East Bay for a matchup with FC Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 29th — that game is scheduled for a 3 PM PT kickoff.

Sammy Baugh -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

Sammy Baugh played for the Washington Redskins from 1937-1952. I’ve never seen him play or even heard of him before meeting him at a sports collectors show. He was probably the oldest athlete in the room, which drew my attention to his table. When I saw the vintage photos he was selling, I just had to get him to sign one for me. Later I did my research and found out how truly fascinating this man was.

Being So Very Wrong is Bad Enough, But in Print? Wow

by Howard Pearlstein

Yeah, last week I wrote about running into Mr Mojo and that how that should mean a lot of good luck in the air for local teams. What with Ricky Pearsall’s magic bullet miracle as an irrefutable sign, I assumed that meant a turn of good luck for the 9ers. (Yeah, I know the old saw – when you “assume” it makes and Ass out of U and Me.)

But even against the Jets, it was a stretch, the only probable bit of magic having been Moody’s skeenteenth field goal hitting the upright and bouncing in for a score.

Later, against the Vikings, no discernible mojo happening in the game.

One of the most important things we see when the mojo is working, win or lose, no injuries beyond bumps and bruises. Well, not going on. The 9ers went into it with McCaffery and Mitchell already hobbled. And came out of it with Kittle and Charvarius Ward being held out of practice, possibly out of Sunday’s game against the Rams. (This is being written on Friday, so when you get to read this on Monday, you’ll know how those packages of pain went, along with whomever else fell on Sunday.) Either way, best not to even talk about mojo.

What made me overlook all that was watching the women of Bay FC flying cross-country last week to North Carolina to play NC Courage to a 1-1 draw. Bay FC was only the second team to score a single point against them this season.

The way that point was made was amazing. With the score at 0-0, it took a lot of tricks and moves and push and shove to get it to late sub Penelope Hocking. She took the ball and went dribbling, in and out and around several players, to get the ball to Asisat Oshoala who did something I've never seen before.

Oshoala was open near the goal line. Hocking put the ball slightly behind her, almost between her feet, her left side toward the goal, and Oshoala barely moved, her right foot coming back a few inches and tapped it in off the left side of her right heel. Just a twitch, quick as a finger snap.

It looked like magic but it wasn’t. It was tough hard high level experienced play.

Their next game was against Orlando Pride, that other team who scored a point against the NC Courage. Orlando was #1 at 14-0-6. And Bay FC held pretty well, no score until late in the game. Orlando put one in the net for 1-0. 15-0-6.

Four more games until playoffs. Right now, Bay FC at 8-12-1 are at #8 just above the line and in the playoffs.

We’ll see. In the meantime, a shoutout to NBC Sports Bay Area for best announcers – Josh Eastern and Jordan Angeli. For a relative newbie like me, their clear descriptions are educational. They include reasons for some tactics and also why and how some have been changed from others. All that increases my understanding of what’s happening as well as allowing me to pretend, in conversations, that I know a bit more than I actually do.

How Will Judge Wilken React To Clarification Of Illegal Terms In Proposed House Settlement?

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

I thought settling the House/Hubbard/Carter v. NCAA cases was supposed to curb litigation against the Association. Ha ha ha...right...

"Attorneys remain confident that the NCAA’s settlement in the House antitrust case will be approved by a California judge after they provide her clarity on key items."

That's the first sentence from Ross Dellenger's article this week, which is a response to Judge Wilken commenting that she found problems with the language in the proposed settlement that would conclude the House/Hubbard/Carter v. NCAA cases.

Judge Wilken's concern was that the drafted language intends to limit boosters and NIL collectives providing compensation to athletes. It didn't appear so much that Judge Wilken had questions, as plaintiffs' counsel Jeffrey Kessler stated to Dellenger, but that she was "quite concerned" about "third party NIL restrictions" in the settlement.

She was skeptical that such payments from boosters and NIL collectives could be deemed "pay-for-play" as opposed to "real NIL," particularly given that a component of the settlement would allow for schools to make direct payments to players, which seems to be pay-for-play.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—Jens Christensen and his team from Denmark prevailed after a week-long race series in the 54th edition of the International Knarr Championships (IKC) held at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California. With a scorecard that included two firsts and three seconds over 10 races, the Danish Olympian (Star Class, 1980) had an edge on the local fleet throughout the week aided by two significant throw-outs—a U flag penalty and an undesirable 18th place. Nonetheless, the battle was close going into the final day, with Christensen one point behind Randy Hecht (USA). The Danish team finished the final race in second, happily sliding into first place overall. Don Jesberg (USA) won the final race to end the regatta in third, just one point behind Hecht.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The California football team drove to the Florida State 12-yard line with under two minutes remaining but was ultimately turned back in a 14-9 loss to the Seminoles in its first Atlantic Coast Conference game ever at Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday night.

The Golden Bears (3-1, 0-1) converted a long third down and sizable fourth down on their final possession, but the drive ultimately stalled at the FSU 23 with just under a minute to play.

"This stings, but this can make us a better team," Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza said. "We have the opportunity to respond. Every guy on the team has a great mindset, and we are all going to respond accordingly."

Cal extended its national lead to 10 interceptions when Miles Williams picked off Seminoles quarterback DJ Uiagalelei in the first quarter.

Saint Mary's College Gaels

Hannah Taylor: 14 Kills, 0.500 Hitting Pct

VB | Gaels Win Fourth Straight to Pull Back to 0.500 on the Campaign

MORAGA, Calif. — It's been a tale of two stretches for the Gaels (4-4). After opening the season with four difficult losses, Saint Mary's has come roaring back to win their next four, with their latest victory coming in the form of a straight set sweep of the Seattle Redhawks (1-7). The Gaels continue to get "better with age" as in their eighth match of the season tonight, they hit a season-high 0.373, besting their previous best set less than 24 hours ago against Air Force (0.274).

The Gaels set the tone early, and never looked back in this one. A 9-8 lead early in set one quickly ballooned to 16-9 thanks to 7-0 run sparked by four Genevieve Bane kills. Even with the two teams trading points to the end, the Gaels' separation was too much for the Redhawks to overcome, as they took set one 25-16. Bane tallied nine kills in the first set alone, accounting for half of the Gaels 18, while Hannah Taylor picked up an errorless five kills. Katherine Gee notched a majority of her digs in the first set, with six.

Santa Clara Broncos

Offense Powers No. 18 Men's Water Polo Past George Washington

Zach Fales scored a career-high eight goals Saturday in the Broncos' win over George Washington.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Senior captain Zach Fales couldn't tell a lie Saturday against visiting George Washington University, scoring a career-high eight goals to power the No. 18 Santa Clara University Broncos to a 17-10 non-conference win over the Revolutionaries at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.

The No. 18 Broncos (5-2) were trailing George Washington (5-5), 5-3, in the second period, perhaps slow to start after Friday's emotional, triple-overtime setback at the hands of rival and No. 9-ranked San Jose State. But they would reset themselves and power up the offense in the second period. George Washington scored four consecutive goals across the first and second periods to take that 5-3 lead after falling behind 3-1 right out the gate.

Fales netted SCU's tying goal at 5-5 midway through the second period. He was the one who put the Broncos on the board to start the day 26 seconds after the opening whistle to make it 1-0. Fales would score consecutive goals at the end of the second period to give Santa Clara a 9-6 halftime lead. He scored four more times in the second half, his last goal of the day putting the Broncos up, 16-10, with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods."
