This Week In Humboldt

We spent last weekend at the 128th annual Humboldt County Fair! Other than the ridiculously overpriced ride tickets ($40 for two kids to go on two rides) we had an absolute blast. Typically we just buy our entry tickets at the gates, but for whatever reason, my wife bought the tickets online this year, which turned out to make a huge difference. After trekking through a parking lot pasture or two, we came upon two 150ft lines of people waiting for their turn at the ticket booth. We put our heads down and made a beeline for the gates making sure to advert our eyes as we dare not make eye contact with anyone who had been waiting in line for countless hours. Once we made it in, we headed straight for the exhibit halls because, for the first time ever, our kids entered an item into the exhibit fair! To all of our surprise and excitement we found out that they won 1st and 2nd place for their dioramas (photo below)

Next we stuffed our faces with fair food before heading to the track to watch those ponies run! As I kid I always loved the horse races, from scoping them out at the paddock and identifying the fastest looking one that was clearly going to win (and never did), to mentally rehearsing your bet

win (and never did), to mentally rehearsing your bet in line so that it came out smoothly once it was your turn at the register, and finally the excitement of screaming for your horse as they come down the stretch. This was the first year that the lightbulb turned on for my kids and they had a blast picking out horses based off of their names, and lost their voices screaming for a win. Enjoy the fair this year, and who knows, maybe we'll get lucky enough to get some motocross races back at the track this year. Congrats to all the parents who made it through the summer, sweet freedom is here now that school is back in session, let us rejoice!
