Dear Friends-

Before Skip and Kathy Windsor moved out of their home in West Newton, I was lucky enough to look through some of Skip’s library.  There was so much of interest, but I settled on a group of books of sermons by the Rt. Rev. Philips Brooks.

Brooks was the Rector of Trinity in Copley Square and Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts.

He was known for his powerful and thoughtful preaching that enlivened the Word.  This must have been true as many of his sermons stretched past an hour in length!  I’ve loved reading through the sermons and would like to share one of my favorite quotes from Brooks.

Brooks said, ‘Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones.’

-George

P.S. Skip will be handling the Sunday service this weekend as I’m still on the Vineyard.  I’ll be back in the office on Wednesday and look forward to seeing you soon!

PARISH NEWS

Anti-Racism Book Club!

As we continue the Christian work of anti-racism, join us in reading, join us in reading The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee.

“This is the book I’ve been waiting for.”—Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist

Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all. But how did this happen? And is there a way out?

Please join us on Tuesday, August 8th at 7PM!

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING B-SAFE!

A very special thank you to all who have supported the B-Safe efforts this summer! Unfortunately our trip to the Wayland Beach was derailed by thunderstorms, but the kids are currently enjoying watching the new Indiana Jones movie instead! We'll share more pictures soon.

Afghan Ministry Update

Camp Brookside is underway and despite the heat, the Mom’s and kids are taking advantage of the shady grounds to socialize and play. We are transitioning to an every other week schedule and will continue that going into the fall. We were able to sign up almost all of the kids for summer school with mixed results. That program ends this week so we are hoping to round up volunteers to be able to occasionally get the kids out of their sweltering apartments to parks and pools in August. The top items on our current wish list are fans, air conditioners, a sewing machine in good working order (the more basic the better), convertible car seat/stroller, and a microwave. One of the families lives within walking distance of the Manchester Police Athletic League. They offer all sorts of programs free to kids, from cooking classes to music to boxing. Here is a picture of the second oldest of the 5 boys in the Shahzada family who was the first to receive a yellow belt in Aikido. He was so proud. And two of our Mom’s were recently accepted into an accelerated English class that meets every morning. We were able to get some bikes donated and they are learning to ride. Meanwhile back in Afghanistan, the Taliban continues to strip women of their rights this week officially banning all of the beauty salons nationwide which were a lifeline to women socially and culturally.

Thank you,

Karen & Hansi

WORSHIP INFORMATION

George’s Vacation & Visiting Clergy

Later this month my family and I will head to Martha’s Vineyard where I take a Summer Chapel called Trinity, Oak Bluffs for two weeks. You’ll be in great hands.

The first week including Sunday, July 23 our Sunday service will be covered by The Rev. Martha Hubbard. Martha, as you may remember, is our Regional Canon and handles (among many other things) congregations in transition. In addition to preaching and celebrating, Martha will be available following the service to talk about our search for a Priest-in-Charge here at St. Peter’s.

The week of Sunday, July 30 will be covered by the Rev. Skip Windsor. Skip and Kathy are on a marvelous trip to the Arctic Circle this month, so be sure to ask them about it!

I’m grateful for the time away with my family and look forward to being back with you in August!

P.S. If you're going to be on the Vineyard, I'd love to see you at Trinity!

Home Communion and Prayer

church set up.jpg

Though many of St. Peter's parishioners have returned to worshiping and receiving Holy Communion in person inside our church building, we know it is not yet safe for all of us to do so. We will continue to live-stream our services so that we may include as many as possible in our offerings of praise and thanksgiving to God.

If it is not yet safe for you to worship with us in person, and you would like to receive Holy Communion and/or a share a time of prayer at your home, please contact the Parish Office.

If you would like to schedule a time during the week for private prayer in the church, please contact the church office.

St. Peter's is committed to continuing to make our worship space safe and welcoming to all. We hope to have you back with us in person as soon as doing so is the right choice for you.
