United Way of South Central MA Day of Caring:
Making a Difference in the Community

The United Way of South Central Massachusetts (UWSCM) held its 16th annual Day of Caring on Friday, June 23, 2023. The event brought 127 volunteers from across the region to work on a variety of projects that benefit local nonprofits and municipalities.
This year, volunteers had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including:

  • Mulching a playground at the Southbridge Tri-Community YMCA
  • Landscape cleanup at Pearl Crawford Library in Dudley
  • Planting trees at Capillo Park in Southbridge
  • Cleaning up and painting the ADA rail at Heritage Trail in Southbridge
  • Painting the inside of Dodge Chapel for Charlton Helping Hands
  • Beach and playground clean up at Sturbridge Recreation Area
  • Major brush removal at Old Sturbridge Village
  • Painting a trail shed for Sturbridge Trails
  • Cleaning at Guild of St. Agnes in Webster
  • Henry St. Park clean up and mulching in Southbridge
  • Webster Middle School basketball clean up and painting
  • Yard work at Catholic Charities in Southbridge
  • Client packet making for Tri-Valley, Inc in Dudley
  • Landscaping at the NEW CMS Chamber offices

The Day of Caring was a great opportunity for individuals, families, and businesses to come together and make a difference in their community. It was a fun and rewarding way to meet new people and learn about the important work that UWSCM does in the South Central Massachusetts region. A multi-generational family comprised of 18 volunteers including children as young as four years old worked hard at the Tri-Community YMCA. The grandfather, Jeff Burdick of Sturbridge, stated “Thanks for putting together an amazing community event! Our family can do hard things…75 yards of mulch does not intimidate us anymore. So glad to serve our beloved YMCA.”

UWSCM is grateful to the many sponsors who make Day of Caring possible. This year's sponsors include Savers Bank, KARL STORZ Endovision, and the Rotary Club of Southbridge, Josh’s Place, and Southbridge Hotel and Conference.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference in your community, United Way Day of Caring is a great option. Mark your calendar for next year June 21, 2024 and join us for a Day of Caring!

Hitchcock Announces its
Summer Concert Series on the Common Lineup
The Series Has Grown to Six Concerts This Year, Running July 19 to August 23

BRIMFIELD – What can be better than children playing and laughing, families and friends getting together, dinnertime picnics, and the community gathering to enjoy the sweet sound of music in the summer night air? Hitchcock proudly announces its lineup for the 2023 Hitchcock Summer Concert Series on the Common which has grown to six concerts this year. Presented on Wednesdays July 19 to August 23, the concerts will run from 6 to 8pm in front of the gazebo. Rain dates will be Thursdays. There will be a food vendor at each concert (picnics are still permitted).

The series kicks off on July 19th with the New England Digital Accordion Orchestra. Conducted by Sam Falcetti of Falcetti Music, this unique 20 piece orchestra is the nation’s only digital accordion orchestra and has a style all their own. Along with vocal performances, you will hear horn and wind sections, strings, guitars, and of course the accordion in beautifully orchestrated arrangements playing many genres of music including Big Band, Broadway, Ethnic, Country and Rock. These dedicated musicians travel from 5 states just to be a part of this. They’ll have you tapping your toes and wanting to get up and dance. It’s a fun experience not to be missed.

July 26th will be the CobbleStone Road Band. Comprised of talented musicians with lots of experience who’ve played with some of the best, CobbleStone Road blends modern country with rock & blues to get your toes tapping and audiences dancing. In a short time, this band has created a strong following and if you like country and haven’t heard them you will quickly become a fan  yourself.

August 2nd will be The Time Stretchers Band has an extended repertoire playing the best music from the 50's to now, followed by The Island Castaways Band on August 9th - New England's Favorite Tropical Rock Band in the music style made famous by Jimmy Buffett They’re perfect for a mid-August evening that can have a tropical feel of its own. On August 16th Sunshine & Blue Skies perform with a mix of Classic Rock, Pop, Country, and Rhythm & Blues. This band is comprised of seasonal professionals but also incorporates exceptional students who are honing their craft and giving them an opportunity to further develop their talent.

The series closes with Hard Knox on August 23rd. Widely known for its unique song selection and unmistakable renditions of those often slightly forgotten favorites. Their performances are jam-packed with songs that will often surprise and delight listeners.

Food trucks have become an important piece of these events as they make it possible for people to simply come down and enjoy but especially for those who may be rushing home from work to be able to come, grab some dinner and just relax. Vendors include BT’s Smokehouse, Rooster's Roaming Cantina, Flippin’ The Bird BBQ, and Tony’s Happy Valley Pizza.

In the case of rain, postponements will be announced on Hitchcock’s Facebook page.

“These concerts feel like magic to me,” says Hitchcock Executive Director Cindy Skowyra. “They’re so simple, but simplicity is harder and harder to find these days. Being able to offer a way for our community to unplug and connect with one another in celebration of music is such a blessing, so I’m thrilled we’ve been able to grow the series with the support of sponsors and donors who know how important events like these are.” She adds, "the common offers not only a beautiful backdrop and a safe area for children but it also has lots of shade for hot summer days.”

The concert series is made possible with key support from Maestro Sponsors Country Bank the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the Shirley Frye Memorial Fund.
