ELDER OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER - Marcia Songer

SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

SERMON NOTES

On Earth Jesus was known by many names and titles. In his approximate 3 year journey of ministry, he was known commonly as preacher, teacher, and healer. And in this Gospel of Matthew, we hear the longest continual set of teachings from Jesus in the entire Bible. This teaching has become known as The Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon, Jesus teaches the crowd, his disciples, and us about many different topics. One of those topics is teaching about prayer. What it means to pray. How should you pray. In this scripture, Jesus is very clear. There is a way to pray to connect with God and neighbors, and there is a way to pray that garner praise and be seen by others. So join us this week as we again as the question of why do we do what we do? And how do we pray?

Yours in Christ

Brandon

ROLL WATAUGA SQUARE - LAST CHANCE

Every Halloween Watauga Avenue Church “rolls” Watauga Square Apartments. That doesn't mean we roll the building with streams of toilet paper in the traditional Halloween sense. It means we donate paper products and other household needs to be used as prizes for the residents' bingo games.  So, when you are shopping this month, if you already have enough paper products for yourself, pick up a pack of four rolls of toilet paper, a roll of paper towels or a box of facial tissue. Other popular gifts suggested are personal care products like shampoo and hand lotion, tooth brushes or tooth paste, cleaning supplies like laundry detergent and bathroom or kitchen cleaners, as well as cat or dog food. Please bring your items and place them in the container in the side entry anytime through Sunday, September 29th. Let’s Roll Watauga Square in a big way. Thanks for your generosity.

BINGO POTLUCK

The Congregational Life Committee will be hosting a Bingo Potluck for the PC(USA) churches in our community on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 5:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite dish to share and be prepared for a fun night of BINGO with fellow Presbyterians. Stacy Larsen will be calling the BINGO games and we will have fun prizes and lots of laughter. Mark your calendars to attend and contact Stacy through email at stacyllarsen@gmail.com with any questions.

GREEN SPACE NEWS

One hallmark of old-growth northeastern deciduous forests in spring is the dazzling display of violets, trilliums, wild ginger, and other wildflowers that carpet the forest floor, but in newer secondary forests, such spring ephemerals tend to be scarce. In recent research published in Ecology, scientists say one explanation may be a lack of woodland ants. According to researchers at Binghamton University, several ant species are critical dispersers of the seeds of native understory wildflowers. "These plants evolved with seeds that have an appendage rich in fats, and that's very attractive to wood land ants," says author Carmela Buono.

The insects take the seeds to their nest where they are safe underground from seed predators such as rodents. They later "plant" the seeds outside the nest. Scientists say the low numbers of woodland ants in regenerated forests stem from several factors, including competition with invasive slugs that thrive on former agricultural lands. To restore the health of these newer forests, "we need to look beyond trees to the diversity of insects," Buono says. "Ants many not be as charismatic as pollinators like bees and butterflies, but they are just as important."
