This Shabbat we begin to read the fifth and final book of the Torah, Sefer Devarim, the Book of Deuteronomy. As is indicated in its opening sentence, this book contains Moshe's final words of encouragement and inspiration to the Jewish people. Chapter 1, verse 1, states, "These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel, on the other side of the Jordan."

Only this Jordan River is separating the children of Israel from their sacred homeland. And, as the people are soon to enter into the promised land, Moses reviews with them some of their history. He reminds them of our sacred ancestors. In chapter 1, verse 8, Moses invokes the names of our Patriarchs saying, "See! I have given the land before you; come and possess the land that God swore to your forefathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them and their children after them."

Just as we may look back to the previous generations of our parents, grandparents, and beyond, in search of comfort or inspiration, our ancient ancestors by the banks of the Jordan River were already looking to their past, seeking the presence of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs to help usher them into their sacred land of Israel.

Moshe inspired the people with these memories and stories. He made sure that they would be ready, both physically and spiritually, for the culmination of their journey.

Although many centuries have passed, Moses continues to inspire us with these words, as we too can be made ready. Ready for all that life has to offer!

Shabbat Shalom!
