President’s Message

The snowmobile season is approaching, but a little slower than most of us would like. The temperatures so far have been mild, and the lakes are just now starting to freeze. We had one snowfall and a few dustings to tease us of things to come. It is enough of a reminder to be sure our registrations are up to date, trail passes ordered, and sleds checked over and ready to go. It is also a reminder it is time to plan our trips to St. Germain. A good place to start is the lodging tab on the Bo-Boen website. Then, our trail map advertisers or contact the Chamber of Commerce.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving celebration. We all have something to be thankful for. The Bo-Boen Club is thankful for all the support it receives from its map advertisers, the landowners, the Town of St. Germain Board, the Chamber of Commerce, and our local community. We are also thankful for all of our members, officers, directors, and volunteers that bring it all together to make St. Germain an excellent snowmobile destination.

Speaking of members, I would like to thank all of you who have renewed your memberships and to the new members who have joined us. We are on our way to exceeding last year’s memberships. We look forward to meeting you at our meetings, events, Wednesday rides, Safety Class, our map advertisers' businesses, or on the trail.

We have two important fundraiser events coming up in February. Hiller’s Radar Run is February 2nd and 3rd, and the Arrowhead Groomer Show is February 7th and 8th. We will need a lot of volunteers for the Radar Run. We will be providing food and beverages for both events and assisting with parking for the Radar Run. Please mark your calendar for these events and consider volunteering. In our next newsletter we will have a link to the volunteer schedule. If you have any questions, please give me a call, or send an email.

You can keep up to date on Bo-Boen happenings and snowmobiling in our area by reading our Facebook page and checking our website. We will post the opening date of trails on each of these.

Let’s all do our part to keep our trails safe and enjoyable by riding on our side of the trail and respecting our landowners by staying on the trail. As always, think snow and please patronize our advertisers; they are a big part of the success of our trail system.

Food Drive Collection

It’s almost that time of year to open our hearts to those less fortunate. At our annual Christmas party at the Whitetail Inn on December 14th, we will be collecting for the Vilas Food Pantry. Monetary donations are greatly appreciated, as the food pantry works with local grocers to get vouchers for meat and fresh vegetables.

Thank you to our incredibly generous Secret Santa's (Bob & Judy Schell), who will again match the cash donations collected at the party!

Non-perishable food and personal care items that are needed most are cereals, granola bars, canned meat, boxed dinners, and peanut butter; and toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Please separate canned items from boxed items, if possible.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

If you’re reading this and coming to our December dinner/meeting at the Whitetail Inn,

write your name and Merry Christmas on a small piece of paper and give it to Ed at the dinner party for a chance to win a Secret Santa prize.

From The Trail Boss

Hello everyone,

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Our trails are 95 - 100 % complete. When the nine-day deer hunt ends, we will completely go through our system to make sure all our signs are the way we left them. What really needs to happen is cold weather to freeze up the swamps and the lakes. So - let's think cold, then snow! But we will take what we get. Thanks to everyone for all the help in making our trail system ready for inspection. Both counties must be inspected prior to our trails opening.

THINK SNOW!!

Snowmobile Safety Class Scheduled

December 9 & 10, 2023

Beginning January 1, 2001, any person born on or after January 1, 1985 and who has reached the age of 12, must have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate in order to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin. The certificate must be carried while operating the snowmobile and displayed to a law enforcement officer upon demand.

Safety Education class is scheduled for December 9 & 10, 2023 at the St. Germain Community Center. Anyone 11 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education certificate; however, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age. Adult students are also welcome to attend. There is a $10 DNR fee payable on the first day of the class. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM on Saturday, December 9. Class will begin at 9:00 AM and complete around 2:30 or 3:00 PM, lunch will be provided. On Sunday, December 10 class will run from 9:00 AM to noon. You are required to attend both days.

Pre-registration is necessary and can be completed online at gowild.wi.gov, or by contacting Peggy Ausloos at Peggy2090@gmail.com or 715-892-6467.

All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR Customer ID# as part of the criteria to graduate from any Recreational Safety Class and provide that number to their instructor. Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID# by logging in to gowild.wi.gov or by calling 1-888-936-7463 between 7 AM and 10 PM. You can also visit a Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours. You will need to provide your social security number to the DNR. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations go to www. gowild.wi.gov and click on the “Get Started” tab.

The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again!

Continuing a tradition over 41 years in the making, the Apple Dumpling Gang rides to lunch every Wednesday, once the trails officially open.  To join the Gang, just show up on your sled at the Bo-Boen groomer barn at 9 a.m. sharp on Wednesdays and bring cash. If your email address has changed, send your contact info by email or text to Wayne Ax at ax52man@gmail.com, or 815-978-4116.

Boo-BBB's

Set to Ride

We had a full house for our annual Boo-BBB's kick-off meeting and luncheon. Thanks to all that were able to come, including lots of new friends. We shared group leader and rider responsibilities, Wednesday ride info, details on the February overnight trip, "Ride Your Side" safety campaign key tags, and lots of laughs and camaraderie.

The ladies' Wednesday rides will begin whenever Mother Nature cooperates! The group will meet at the groomer barn (with gas tanks full) and leave at 9:00 am sharp. We take a longer route to lunch and a shorter route back. We are usually back about 3:00 pm. Watch for an email shortly before the ride and be sure to RSVP so we know who will be riding.

The overnight trip will be February 13-15 (Tuesday-Thursday). We are going to The Konteka Black Bear Resort in White Pine, Michigan. There are a few rooms still available under the name St. Germain Snowmobilers. The rooms are $110 plus tax.  You will need to call Konteka at 906-885-5170 to reserve a room. You will also need a Michigan trail pass for the trip. Here is the website for the trail pass:

"Ride Your Side"

Safety Awareness Campaign Continues

This summer, the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club launched our Ride Your Side awareness campaign to promote safe, responsible trail riding for visitors to the St. Germain area. This campaign emphasizes staying to the right when riding the trails. The bright yellow key tags were introduced at the November Membership Meeting. They will be available at events and activities to remind sledders to stay on the right-hand side of the trail. They were specifically designed with the novice in mind and will be distributed to sled rental establishments and snowmobile safety students. In addition to our campaign message "Ride Your Side the life you save may be your own"the tag has the club logo and a QR code that takes you to the DNR snowmobile laws and regulations for easy reference.

The initiative also includes a Snowmobile Safety Pamphlet with easy access to key information, as well as Ride Your Side informational trail signs as a reminder to sledders while on our trails.
