A Message from the Executive Director of the Florida Chamber Safety Council, Jason Mozo, J.D.

Hello!
Every first week in the month of May, we participate and give countless presentations and trainings during Construction Safety Week and OSHA’s National Stand-Down on Fall Prevention ( www.osha.gov/stop-falls-stand-down ) in order to give companies throughout the State of Florida the education needed to establish a safer worker place for their employees. We are offering savings of up to 20% OFF our Fall Protection training class for the month in collaboration with Safety Week. All you need to do is schedule this training class within the next 90 days to receive this discount.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Fall Protection – General Requirements was the # 1 cited work violation with 5,260 citations issued 2022 Top 10 OSHA Violations. This has continued to be the #1 violation within the workplace year after year. Some other topics that have also made the Top 10 list that are in relation to Falls are Ladders at #4 with 2,143 citations and Fall Protection – Training Requirements comes in at #8 with 1,556 citations issued.
Falls are the #1 cause of fatalities within the workplace. On average, there are just over 800 fatalities that result from falls in the workplace every year. That is equivalent to approximately 2.2 fatalities every day, which brings 1 death every 12 hours where a worker is killed due to a fall within the workplace. These fatalities are a result from falling as low as even 3ft, which is a reason to go above and beyond the OSHA requirements dependent upon industry standards to better protect your employees from falls. The statistics are based off workplace fatalities, but keep in mind these happen even greater in a private settings such as at your home, while being on vacation and numerous other extracurricular activities outside of the workplace. Let’s work together in lowering the number of fatalities and injuries relating to falls and schedule a Safety Training class with us now!
We at the Florida Chamber Leadership Cabinet continue to be excited with a significant growth in companies all throughout the State investing within their company and employees Safety, Health and Sustainability by becoming members of the Florida Chamber Safety Council and scheduling a multitude of Safety Training courses that is specific to their workplace. Nothing is more important than establishing a safer and healthier workplace! May is Mental Health Awareness Month
|
|
During Mental Health Month this May, one simple yet powerful act you can do to observe and support mental health is to practice active listening.
Active listening involves giving your undivided attention to someone when they're speaking, without interrupting or judgment. It shows empathy, understanding, and helps create a safe space for open communication. By actively listening, you offer support to those struggling with mental health challenges and help break the stigma surrounding it.
Remember, active listening is not about offering advice or trying to fix someone's problems. It's about creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel heard and understood. By practicing active listening, you contribute to promoting mental well-being and fostering stronger connections within your community.

April 2023 Safety, Health & Sustainability Update
|
|
According to the Florida Chamber Safety Council's Florida Workplace Safety Report released in 2020:
Safety
The most recent data published by the Florida Division of Workers’ Compensation reveals that in 2018 over 61,970 workers’ compensation claims were filed, or a rate of 6.9 claims per 1,000 workers. While the actual number of total claims has been rising every year, the rate per 1,000 workers’ compensation claims been steadily trending downward since 2011. When workers’ compensation claims are broken out by county, as expected the large population centers in the state stand out. Miami-Dade County was the site of over 14 percent of all workers’ compensation claims from 2011 to 2018. Orange County, which includes Orlando, is the next highest contributor to claims in the state.
Health
Another metric of physical health risk is the prevalence of heart disease in the population. When adjusted for age, about 4.2 percent of Florida’s population had been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or angina. Florida ranks on the higher end of heart disease prevalence, 38th place (13th highest) among all 50 states in 2018. Given these higher rates of diabetes and heart disease in the Florida population, the workforce in the state may have higher overall risk or more severe impacts from a workplace incident. This highlights the importance of company wellness programs and health-based incentives. Some employers may see a need to institute a physical exam, or increase minimum physical fitness, prior to hiring for dangerous occupations.
Sustainability
Air pollution can exacerbate existing asthma and according to the CDC poor air quality can contribute to the onset of asthma. In Florida, when adjusted for age, about 9 percent of the population has been diagnosed with asthma. The state has the 12th lowest level of asthma diagnosis in the country.
