Saluting additional winners of the 2023 Carmage Walls Commentary Prize

Alexander City (Alabama) Outlook General Manager Tippy Hunter (left) presents Lizi Arbogast Gwin, managing editor of The Outlook, with second place honors for column writing in the Carmage Walls Commentary Prize among newspapers under 35,000 circulation. In selecting her entry for honors, contest judges said she "wrote from the heart."

The Palm Beach Post Executive Editor Rick Christie (left) presents the America's Newspapers Carmage Walls Commentary Prize for Editorial Writing to Editorial Page Editor Tony Doris (center) and Editorial Writer Douglas C. Lyons (right). Doris and Lyons took third place in this year's competition for editorials about an issue that judges noted is top of mind in Florida.

National Newspaper Association calls proposed new postal rates 'punitive'


The proposed Jan. 21, 2024, postage increase for community newspapers is nearly four times the rate increase proposed for other users of the mail. In an announcement last Friday, the United States Postal Service announced it expected a 7.3 percent increase for the local Within County mailing rate for newspapers.
