Loss of a Colleague and Celebration of Life: Professor Janet Nichols

Professor Janet Nichols (April 7, 1950 – September 15, 2023)

Earlier this month, CSU Pueblo lost a stalwart member of our community. Professor Janet Nichols (Mathematics) passed away at her home in Canon City, surrounded in love with her children, Gina and Dan, after a turbulent battle with metastatic pancreatic cancer.

CSU Pueblo President, Timothy Mottet, shared the following: “With the passing of Dr. Janet Nichols, we have lost a great friend, colleague, and incredible educator. Across four decades, Dr. Nichols helped students understand and appreciate mathematics and life. Janet has been the constant on a campus full of change. She kept us grounded, and I know it’s going to take some time to find our footing again.”

Janet began her time at CSU Pueblo as an Instructor in Mathematics at the, then, University of Southern Colorado, August 29, 1977. By 1979, she became an Assistant Professor of Mathematics, and Associate Professor of Mathematics, with tenure, in August 2005. Janet was an active participant in the Rocky Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America, and was an extremely successful teacher, consistently attracting large numbers of students to her classes despite — or perhaps because of — her high expectations. She worked tirelessly, both in and out of the classroom, to ensure that her students succeeded in attaining their goals. In addition to caring deeply about her own teaching and students, Janet gave freely of her time, energy and experience to help her colleagues resolve their own classroom dilemmas, and she worked to support every departmental, college, and university initiatives focused on improving learning outcomes.

NEW: Cybersecurity Awareness Month - Password Security

On behalf of the IT Information Security

In recognition of Cyber Awareness Month, it's vital to highlight the importance of strong passwords and the role that password managers play in securing our digital lives. Passwords remain the first line of defense against cyber threats, making it essential for every user to prioritize their password strength and uniqueness.

Creating strong passwords involves using a combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and special characters, while avoiding easily guessable information like birthdays or common words. It's crucial to use different passwords for various accounts to prevent a domino effect if one is compromised. However, remembering complex passwords for multiple accounts can be challenging. This is where password managers come to the rescue. Password managers not only generate and store strong, unique passwords for each account but also automatically fills the password in a field in when needed, eliminating the need to remember them. They provide a secure and convenient solution for users to enhance their online security, and many reputable options are available, such as KeePass, Dashlane, and 1Password. This Cyber Awareness Month, consider adopting a password manager as a powerful tool to fortify your digital defenses and keep your sensitive information safe from prying eyes and cyber threats.

Need Help Putting Together a Successful Grant Proposal?

On behalf of Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

CSU Pueblo has recently employed Hanover research to provide targeted guidance for the university's programmatic and research grant activities by helping faculty and staff craft the most competitive submissions to secure more external grant funding.

Hanover is available to provide insights to identify, craft, and submit the most competitive proposals, including - Capacity Development (the development of the institutional capacity to pursue and manage grant funding through training, strategic assessment, and benchmarking.

Includes grantsmanship workshops, one-on-one guidance, and cohort-based support through Hanover's Grant Academy); Funding Research (exploring and evaluating grant opportunities aligned to programs, funding levels, and research needs.

Facilitates planning through research on historical and future funding trends while monitoring which funders our peers are targeting.); Pre-Proposal Support (streamlining the assessment and development of competitive project concepts, helping to navigate funder expectations and providing coaching on program officer outreach before proposal development; Proposal Support (helping bolster grant proposal projects through hands-on review and revision services, ensuring that the most competitive proposals are submitted; and Proposal Development (providing primary writing and project management capabilities, ushering institutional teams from iterative drafts to polished, on-time submissions).

If you are interested in the Hanover offerings, please contact the Executive Director of Research for additional information and to enter your project into the queue. Also, an overview of the Hanover offerings can be found via the link below.

Researchers and Program Managers, Update Your CITI Compliance Training Requirements

On behalf of Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Please ensure that your CITI Program Compliance training is current as required by the University and state and federal funding agencies.

Compliance is a critical part of the operation of any university, and non-compliance can negatively affect not only a single researcher but all university researchers. CSU Pueblo provides all faculty, staff, and students with the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) for its research compliance training requirements.

New to the CITI Program? CITI is utilized by the Top-25 Best National Universities, 95% of Carnegie R1 Research Universities, more than 12 million users, with more than 22 million total course completions.

With the recent influx of federal funding across the university, institutional compliance and proof of individual research compliance training and updates have become an even more essential requirement. In addition, individual non-compliance can also lead to research misconduct, so don’t delay!
