Alumni deliver words of wisdom at convocation ceremonies

An incredible 3,850 students from Georgian’s seven campuses graduated from 130 programs this month, joining the college’s global community of more than 95,000 alumni.

Over the course of the six ceremonies between June 19 to 21, three distinguished Georgian alumni proudly delivered an inspirational keynote address.

Thank you to Maria Artuso (class of 2001), Arjun Batra (class of 2007) and Amanda Baysarowich (class of 2006 and 2008) for enthusiastically sharing how their Georgian credential has helped them reach and exceed their career aspirations.

In fact, this year’s convocation was full of meaningful moments and milestones. The ceremonies also included two special elements: the addition of an Eagle Feather on June 19, which was gifted by an alumnus, and on June 20, an honorary degree was presented to community and business leader Peter B. Moore. Read the full story.

Convocation season isn’t over yet – Georgian looks forward to celebrating with soon to be new graduates from Georgian@Ilac in July.

Congratulations to all!

Earlier in the month, graduates of the Georgian-Lakehead University joint programs were celebrated at the convocation ceremony in Orillia. Congratulations to all the graduates who crossed the stage to receive their credentials.
Honouring Indigenous History Month
Georgian has been acknowledging and celebrating National Indigenous History Month. Check out the activities and events that took place throughout June that honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, and discover more about their unique cultures, traditions and experience.

Entrepreneurial grad recognized for sharing expertise
Georgian’s Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre (HBEC) held its annual Henry Bernick Awards, an evening of connecting, networking, and a celebration of entrepreneurship, on May 25 at the Barrie Campus.

Darryl Hindle (class of 1999) won the Entrepreneurs’ Champion award. A long-time entrepreneur and the owner of Quench Buggy, Darryl has benefited from several mentors in his career journey. Currently the Board Chair of Community Futures in Collingwood, Darryl dedicates his time to being a mentor to others through his volunteer work with a range of organizations.
“Everything I have done in business has been aided by many others and I believe it is my duty to give back to help the business community,” he said.

Congratulations Darryl!
Pride at Georgian
Activities at Georgian campuses for Pride Month ranged from flag raisings, button making, movie nights, to rainbow cookies and face painting – and also enthusiastic participation in the Barrie Pride Parade.

The 2SLGBTQIA+ community is always welcome at Georgian. We see you, you are important, and we stand with you as a proud ally.

While Pride Month officially takes place in June, it is important to remember that the celebration, support, and advocacy for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community extend far beyond a single month. The fight for equality and acceptance is ongoing, and we must continue to stand together every day of the year.

2023 Rotary Fun Run
Team Georgian unites for Rotary Run

Over 100 Georgian students, alumni, staff, faculty and retirees laced up on May 31 to walk and run along Barrie’s beautiful waterfront during the annual Rotary of Barrie Fun Run. Georgian’s mascot Growler braved the heat to be there to greet his fans and to help ensure all participants were having a bear-y good time during this charity race.

Special thanks to Georgian alumnus and Rotarian Chris Holmes (class of 1994) for being a key organizer of this well attended race. All proceeds raised help Rotary to support many worthy charities – including Georgian College.
Auto Show 2023 includes key special tribute
For the first time in three years, the Auto Show returned from June 2 to 4, with students driving home a truly exceptional experience for the thousands of visitors who attended. It remains the largest outdoor, student-led new car auto show in Canada.

The event’s opening ceremony included a special tribute to Jason Ono-O’Connor, an exceptional fourth-year student who studied in the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Automotive Management) degree program.

Jason was hired to serve as a student director for this year’s show but tragically passed away with five other young adults in a single vehicle accident last summer.

To celebrate his life, the Jason Ono-O’Connor Memorial Endowment Fund was established. The fund will support future students following in Jason’s footsteps.
