Dean Marisa Cianciarulo


Q: What makes you most excited about working at Western State?


A: During the 17 years I was at Chapman University’s Fowler School of Law, Western State has been our neighbor. Western State has a strong reputation and continues to serve an important role in the legal community – especially in Southern California. I am honored and excited to bring my skills to Western State and build upon the incredible foundation Dean Easley established. During my interactions with Western State, I could tell it had a collaborative environment and strong alumni base. Those aspects are strong footholds for continued growth.

On Thursday, September 7th, longtime and seasoned alumni gathered at Casa Del Sol in Irvine, CA, to help welcome our newest graduates to the Western State Alumni Network.


Dean Marisa Cianciarulo welcomed the crowd and recognized esteemed guests. The evening was highlighted with a round of applause for the Class of 2023 and closed out the evening with a raffle.

Q&A With Patrick G. Longhi, Esq.


Patrick G. Longhi (Class of 1980) is admitted to practice law in Georgia and Washington, D.C. With his general trial practice, he has been advising and representing individuals and businesses since the 1980s. Patrick has practiced before both federal and state trial courts and filed briefs with the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Georgia, the United States 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.


Q: How do you view Western State’s position in the legal community?


A: Its influence is felt not only in California but also in areas like Georgia, where I settled, and others across the United States.


Q. What success are you most proud of and why?



A: I am proud recipient of the Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award. They start my bio by saying I’m a “Lawyer Educator,” and that sums my career…

Hinds, Warren

Warren Hinds (Class of 1988) was recently the feature of an Atlanta Jewish Times article which profiled his 30 year career of representing plaintiffs and defending attorneys in legal malpractice lawsuits and State Bar disciplinary complaints in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

Edwin Hong (Class of 2018) recently received the Marjorie Day Award from the Robert A. Banyard American Inn of Court. The Banyard Inn of Court strives to improve the legal profession through the promotion of skills, professionalism, and ethics.

Jim Randall (Class of 1980) hosted another one of his famous and ever-popular Western State Hot Dog Days for students. This is Jim's 16th year hosting Hot Dog Day for WSCL students and he plans on continuing the tradition.

Traut, Eric

Eric V. Traut (Class of 1989, Hall of Fame) was recently elected as Secretary of the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA). Eric will begin his term January 1, 2024, and will continue to serve the OCBA as Treasurer in 2025, President-Elect in 2026, President in 2027, and Immediate Past President in 2028.

Waite, Brian

Brian Waite (Class of 1993) has been appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as a judge in the Orange County Superior Court. Prior to his appointment, Brian served as an Assistant Public Defender at the Orange County Public Defender's Office since 2010 and as a Deputy Public Defender from 1998 to 2010.

Incoming Students Take Oath of Professionalism


On Friday, August 18, 2023, Western State welcomed over 110 newly admitted students to the WSCL Community. The Parents & Partners portion of the event is specifically designed for the family and friends of students to learn about the law school experience so they can aid in their loved one's success.


The event concluded with the Honorable Ebrahim Baytieh (Class of 1996) administering an oath of professionalism to the students as they begin their law school journey. 


Also joining Judge Baytieh with words of wisdom: Dean Marisa Cianciarulo, Dean Paul Arshagouni, Professor Tina Schindler, Steven Alvarado (Class of 2018), Heidi Kim (Class of 2018), and Michael A. Gregg, OCBA President.

WSCL Welcomes Five New Faculty Members and Unveils Latest Campus Updates

The fall class of 2023 will be the first incoming class to benefit from the recent construction which includes five new classroom spaces and twelve additional study rooms, as well five new faculty members, including full-time faculty Stacey Kim-Jackson, Sabrina Rivera and Robert Somers and visiting faculty Cassandra Mellas ('19) and Kirsten Pescetti ('21).
