Realm Church Directory is Here!

The wait is over – a new online church pictorial directory is in the works! Everyone who is a member or attends worship services on a regular basis is invited and encouraged to participate. Our data source for the directory will be Realm®, the church management software platform our church already uses for our membership database and giving records. (All giving information is completely secure and is not available to anyone other than the giver and FPC’s Business Administrator.) Those with online capabilities will access the directory from a computer and/or smart phone after setting up a personal Realm account. Those without online access can chose to have their information updated/included for them and will be provided with a paper copy of the directory. Whether you are a technical genius, have never touched a computer or smart phone, or are somewhere in between – we want you to join us in the directory. ONLY members of the FPC community who chose to participate will have access to the online directory. By electing to be in the directory, your name will be visible to everyone with directory access. If you decide to add a photo to your profile, the photo will be visible as well. As you set up your personal Realm account, you can choose to limit visibility of other personal information such as address, phone number(s), email address(es) and/or personal information that includes birth month and day, skills, and interests.

READY? - CLICK HERE TO GET STARTED

For church members who do not use computers or smart phones – please hold tight – you can attend one of the Directory Help Sessions (Oct 22 or Oct 29; 10-10:50 AM in the Parlor) and complete your directory sign up via paper, or if homebound, we will be contacting you in November to offer sign up at home.

October Mission: Rise Against Hunger Mission Focus

As we share our money (for October’s special offering) and time (to pack meals at FPC on Sunday November 5th), you might be wondering where these resources will be distributed! The Rise Against Hunger organization distributes food relief meals of vitamin and mineral-enriched rice, soy protein and dehydrated vegetables across 6 continents and 37 countries, including Ukraine, Cambodia, Ghana, Haiti, Madagascar, and many others. Some meals will travel to school feeding programs, providing essential nutrition to help children in areas of food insecurity. Provision of these meals also encourages students to attend school more regularly and perform to their best potential without suffering from empty stomachs. Other meals are used for food crisis relief in areas that have experienced natural disasters, political strife, armed conflict, or other local emergencies. Please make plans to support this mission effort by donating to this month’s offering or volunteering to help package meals together in the Fellowship Hall on November 5th! Registration for this event will open in mid-October.

Reading Buddies

Help us support at-risk students in kindergarten through second grade with positive adult mentors, role models, and incentives to ensure they enter third grade reading on grade level. Third grade is a critical benchmark for young learners, and studies show that students who are not reading on grade level by third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school on time. 95.5% of Reading Buddies students showed literacy gain on annual assessments. Reading Buddies will start meeting on October 17th, so there is still time to volunteer. Even if you can’t volunteer, every donation makes a difference. To reach out to donate or volunteer, contact Kay Ward at [email protected].

Next Wednesday Fellowship: Serve

Serve with joy and gladness, knowing that God is good and his love endures forever.

Come join us on Wednesday for the seventh week of our mission statement series! This week, we’ll be discussing what it means to serve with abundant generosity. When we serve others like Jesus served, we are reflecting his love and grace to the world. We are also showing our gratitude for God’s gift of salvation. Our scripture readings for this lesson will be Psalm 100, Luke 22:24-27, and Peter 4:7-11.

Fellowship dinner will begin at 5:30 PM in the fellowship hall, followed by the adult study and activities for youth and children.

Organist's Footnotes

Dale Wood (1934-2003) was for many years Organist and Choirmaster in San Francisco at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin, as well as director of the Grace Cathedral Boys’ Chorus. He served in a similar capacity in Lutheran churches in Hollywood, and Riverside, California. He was Executive Editor of the Sacred Music Press from 1975 to 1996. I knew Wood throughout the musical community as a master of melody, and “the difficult art of simplicity.” Besides his prolific volume of published choral works and hymn tunes, his compositions for handbells, harp, and organ are performed regularly throughout the world. His sparkling, exuberant, and readily identifiable style caused many to refer to him as “Mr. Joy.”

All three pieces I play today are perfect examples of his joy. “God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heaven’s” (our opening voluntary) is based on the shape-note hymn holy manna from The Columbian Harmony, 1825, which is the same tune used in our opening hymn #396, “Brethren, Dale We Have Met to Worship”. Wood’s setting begins and ends quietly, building to full organ in the middle. ~ Wood’s “Caricature of a Sunday School Song” (offertory) based on the tune Jesus loves me by William B. Bradbury (1816-1868), sparkles with character and humor. ~ Finally, “In Christ There Is No East or West” (closing voluntary) is based on the tune mc kee by Harry T. Burleigh (1866-1949). We will sing this tune to the words of “The Church of Christ Cannot Be Bound” (Hymn #766). Wood’s setting is full of fanfare, which is just what we need to send us on our way. - Bob Greene
