Giving Gratitude to

Foodnet Meals on Wheels

"Volunteers are an important part of our Foodnet kitchen where they help prepare and pack meals that our drivers deliver to seniors all over Tompkins County.

We are so grateful to all six Community Foundation staff for their help in October!"

~Aly Evans, Executive Director of Foodnet Meals on Wheel

Community Foundation staff:

We were happy to help in the kitchen! We learned Foodnet's nutritious menus are designed by a registered dietician and head cook with senior needs in mind. Drivers are exceptional and check in with each client at each delivery to say hello. Clients say beyond getting a tasty meal, they enjoy the connection knowing that the Foodnet team cares.

A Collaboration with

Ithaca College Park School

For four years Ithaca College Professor Arhlene Flowers (pictured above) has offered her fall semester Public Relations classes a real-life experience in public relations in our office.

Big shout-out to this year's amazing student volunteers, Avery, Addison & Eliana, 🎉 in helping us with regular communications. This semester they delivered content and crafted social media posts to shape our public perception and to increase awareness of our work and goals.

Thankful for 2023 Ithaca College Student Volunteers

Avery Virkler (pictured below) is a senior Integrated Marketing Communications major with a minor in Live Event Design and Management. Avery is from Binghamton, NY, where her interest in working with nonprofits began. She is passionate about the connections that promote community engagement and the creativity that inspires event management.

Addison Knapman is a senior Integrated Marketing Communications major with a minor in Education Studies. Addison is from Seattle, Washington. She is enthusiastic about community service and graphic design.

Eliana Patterson is a senior Integrated Marketing Communications major with a minor in Media Literacy and Psychology. Eliana is from Londonderry, NH and being from a small-town community means a lot to her. She is passionate about storytelling and developing strategic brand designs.

Prof. Flowers' students have won various awards. Their talents helped in fostering community growth with us! #IthacaCollege

Thank You, Andy Sciarabba

In the heart of Lansing, NY, we are inspired by respected business leader Andy Sciarabba and his creation of the Lansing Community Fund, a field of interest fund.

Sciarabba's vision was born from a profound love for the community, a vision grounded in supporting its distinct needs. His hands-on involvement with transformative projects like the Community Recreation Center, Lansing Food Pantry and the Lansing Library reinforced the significance of tangible, community-driven change.

Now: You can join in this journey to help shape Lansing's future, go to this link (type "Lansing Community Fund").

This is not a donor-advised fund, per Andy's interests. The fund will propel grants tailored to address Lansing community challenges, and embodies a spirit of focused rural generosity through a grant making process and more!

Grateful for Our Leadership

Before we unplug for the holiday, staff would like to send thanks to our 2023 Board and Community volunteers including Chair, Theoria Cason (pictured above), for their support.

Our board members are incredibly passionate about the work we do. They give time in the evenings for meetings, their talents in strategic planning, they are in the trenches learning what is needed and are committed to seeing us grow.

They are rock stars! Even though they are busy, they step up and help us strengthen Tompkins County:

Fall Grant Cycle Results

Staff and volunteers provide multiple hours to get the maximum possible impact from our philanthropic dollars. Each year we strive to improve as a grantmaker—whether that is by increasing the grant dollars awarded, finding new ways to respond to the needs of our community, responding using a DEI lens, acting as a convener to pull grantee partners and donor advisors together, or implementing new methods to grow our levels of transparency and engagement.

This grant cycle had fewer dollars available with which to make grants therefore each of these methods was used. We PROUDLY ANNOUNCE 57 fall grants were awarded totaling $244,427 to a variety of mission-driven organizations in Tompkins County. These grants will improve outcomes for our community.

Community Foundation is committed to and cares deeply about our community. As we look to find additional ways to strengthen Tompkins County's nonprofit ecosystem and we are more than an organization that provides grant checks. We continue to explore capacity building models to empower our community organizations. Stay engaged with us!

Uncharitable Movie Screening

On November 9 about 100 community members and staff watched a free screening of the movie Uncharitable at Cinemapolis. A first of its kind documentary film with Edward Norton and Dan Pallotta exposing the dark side of philanthropy and introducing a radical new way of giving. An emotional call to action for charities to be freed from traditional constraints so that they may truly change the world. It was followed by a panel discussion with local mission driven leaders.
