Dear Pastoral Assistants of Faith Formation and Catechists,
MINISTERING TO GEN -Z
Fr. George Elliott, wrote an article on November 12, 2020, in which he presents some similarities between two of the most recent generations that we are encountering in our programs and parishes. Using findings from his own research and experience in the parish and in campus ministry he offers the following similarities:
- Millennials and Gen-Zers seek authenticity.
- Millennials and Gen-Zers are digital natives.
- Millennials and Gen-Zers struggle with identity.
- Millennials and Gen-Zers seek a sense of belonging first.
- Millennials and Gen-Zers as a generation are multi-ethnic.
He also points out the differences to keep in mind while doing ministry:
- Gen-Zers seek more security than Millennials.
- Gen-Zers are more sensitive to diversity and inclusion than Millennials.
- Gen-Zers are more post-Christian than Millennials.
- Gen-Zers oftentimes have never seen a healthy marriage up close.
- Gen-Zers want to see faith in action.
Then he proposes a few good practices to incorporate in our ministry:
- Form the ministry around opportunities for dialogue.
- Form their peers to hold leadership positions.
- Answer the questions they are really asking.
- Preach identity.
- Don’t neglect multi-generational bonds.
- Get active.
- Be respectful, but teach the truth.
