Support our $20 for your 20 Monthly Giving Program

We are working to grow our community of monthly donors!

Recurring giving is one of the easiest, most meaningful ways to support our work. Your monthly $20 donation helps ensure our continued support of the SPD Units that needs us the most, including the Mounted Patrol Unit, the K9 Unit, the EMT Unit, Harbor Patrol, SWAT, and others.

If you’ve ever wondered what you can do to support the men, women, and four-legged law enforcement professionals of the Seattle Police Department, opting in to our recurring giving program is a great way to do exactly that.

Introducing Mounted Patrol Unit Police Horse Callum

We are excited to introduce you to the Seattle Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit’s newest Police Horse, Police Horse Callum!

Police Horse Callum was purchased by the Seattle Police Foundation’s We Heart Horses donors, plus a generous in-kind donation from his Seattle-based owner. He is a 6-year-old registered Gypsy Vanner gelding, and has a calm, easygoing, sweet-natured personality. Police Horse Callum is special for a number of reasons (check out those feathered hooves) and one of those reasons is his name.

The naming rights to Police Horse Callum were auctioned off at this year’s Celebrity Waiters Luncheon auction, and the responsibility couldn’t have gone to a more selfless group of donors, whose vision for this horse’s name took shape when they saw his picture at the auction.

Police Horse Callum is named in honor of famed Australian surfer and lacrosse player Callum Robinson, whose life was cut tragically short in May of 2024. Not only did the world lose Callum, but also his brother, Jake, and a third individual named Jack Carter Rhoad.

Get the full story behind the name on our website at: Naming Police Horse Callum

Police Horse Callum is truly a community horse and we’re so grateful for every single one of our We Heart Horses donors. Whether you donated $10 or $1,000, your donation mattered. This gorgeous new police horse is only possible because of you. Thank you!!

CSO Unit Football Combine is Sizzling Success

The Seattle Police Foundation was excited to fund the first-ever Community Service Officer (CSO) Unit Football Combine, which invited high school athletes aged 17 – 19 onto the gridiron to perform in front of coaches and representatives from local colleges.

The event took place Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Seattle’s Genesee Park and Playfield, with roughly 25 student athletes braving the July heat for an afternoon of warm-ups, sprints, agility drills, and scrimmage. The event included free beverages, ice cream, and freshly grilled hotdogs courtesy of SPD’s Quartermaster Unit, which also served orange slices and other snacks.

Mentors included Jacob Hurlbert from Pacific Northwest Christian College (PNWCC), John Bickford from Verity Movement, and Willamette University Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach Tim Rude.

The Football Combine was made possible by Seattle Police Foundation donors and was funded during SPF’s spring 2024 grants process. We’re extremely grateful to our partners at AT&T, who joined us at the event to pass out refurbished laptops to combine participants and present us with a generous $5,000 donation to support the continued work of the CSO Unit.

This year, SPF and AT&T celebrate four consecutive years of partnership and we’re so grateful for AT&T’s commitment to equity, community engagement, and bridging the digital divide.

This was a fantastic event! The athletes really put in the work and didn’t let the heat diminish their motivation to perform. They were so impressive and brimming with potential. We want to say thank you to all the amazing donors who make our grants program possible. Without you, these important community connections would go unmade. We are incredibly grateful!

4Cs - Cops, Community, Cutz, and Convos

The Seattle Police Foundation is excited to fund another year of the 4Cs – Cops, Community, Cutz, and Convos, a community outreach program created by Officer Aaron Lucas to provide free haircuts to Seattle youth in a variety of settings.

This $1,000 grant covered everything he needed to equip his pop-up barber shop and take his show on the road. Lucas, who owned and operated a barber shop in the Central District prior to trading in his clippers for a police badge, leverages his skills as a barber to connect with youth, build relationships, and increase positive interactions between the police and the community. The 4Cs barber shop pop-ups take place at SEAPAL events, Seattle Parks’ Late Night programs, and at community centers.

He also does haircuts at the King County Children and Family Justice Center, which houses justice-involved youth. Here, the 4Cs serves as way for Lucas to build and foster connections with youth in detention, to improve outcomes and alter negative trajectories.

We caught up with him last week doing haircuts at the Bitter Lake Community Center. The 4Cs fits perfectly in with SPF’s mission to build community with youth and is a lot of fun!

Checking in with SPD Comfort Dog Ryan

Monday, July 22, Comfort Dog Ryan celebrated two years of service with the Seattle Police Department!

We are so proud of this dog and the important work he is doing in the Seattle community. As a Comfort Dog, Ryan uses his sweet, calm disposition to help soothe victims of violent crime, domestic violence, child abuse, and more. He’s a wonderful community-builder, who loves meeting people of all ages. He’s got such an important role at SPD, we decided to share more about what he’s been up to since joining the Department.

Thank you to America’s Vet Dogs and Courthouse Dogs for making Ryan possible at SPD.

Whether they’re sniffing out explosives, locating narcotics, finding hidden electronic storage devices, tracking fleeing subjects, or comforting survivors of violent crime, these dogs do what humans cannot. We’re so grateful for SPD’s K9 Unit and the SPF donors who support it.

North Precinct Officers Save Hot Dogs

On Thursday, July 4, officers from the Seattle Police Department’s North Precinct responded to a 911 call in which the caller reported dogs left inside a vehicle. When officers arrived, they spotted the vehicle, and discovered that a female dog had been left inside the car with her five young puppies.

The vehicle’s doors were closed, and the windows were rolled up.

Temperatures on July 4 were in the 80s and even warmer in some parts of Seattle. The temperature inside the vehicle was likely much hotter, as temperatures rise exponentially inside vehicles on sunny days. According to the National Weather Service, on warm sunny days the temperatures inside a closed car can reach over 120 degrees within minutes.

Luckily, the door was unlocked, and officers quickly retrieved this proud momma and her precious pups. These adorable little puppies spent some time at the North Precinct, as officers fed momma and gave them all some water. As you can imagine, North Precinct officers enjoyed their puppy therapy, before turning these sweet K9s over to the Seattle Animal Shelter.

The dogs’ owner was arrested for animal cruelty.

Please leave your pets at home on hot days!

We’re so grateful to the good neighbor who called this in and even more grateful to responding officers for taking quick action and rescuing these pups in time. Huge thanks to our friends at North Precinct for sharing the details (and the pictures) and more thanks to SPD for allowing us to share this story.

Thank you, SPD!
