We are writing you from a time of transition, growth and reflection.
As we approach the 4
th
year of the re-opening of the new Loisaida Inc Center we renew our commitment to support the Lower East Side's and NYC-based Latinx / Caribbean, arts and culture sector.
This end of year newsletter includes just a little about the huge strides we took this year in engaging broad populations, addressing big issues,
advancing cultural production, and amplifying our advocacy for media, environmental and cultural equity
. Much of this is thanks to you, our participative community and trusted friends, who we owe such a debt of gratitude for believing in our mission.
It is with pleasure that we note a few of our 2017 achievements.

Loisaida Cultural Plan
Loisaida created an eloquent
advocacy document and principles, synthesis of the various event discussions, comments, observations, as well as the overall recommendations that this significant community input process produced on behalf of the Loisaida/Lower East Side community. We offer them confidently, in the spirit of collaboration, and with a commitment to continue to work with the Administration, DCLA, the City Council, as well as with the many residents, cultural workers and artists that we motivated to participate, and became engaged in this planning process.

Artistic Residencies
Loisaida's unique and innovative residency program is a platform for contemporary and emerging artists and cultural producers working in a variety of disciplines. This year we hosted and nurtured four artists in residence: Atomic Culture, Poncili Creacion, Varona, Ende and Polnau, and Juan Bautista Climent. The program aspires to benefit both the community of independent artists as well as the geographical community of Loisaida.

The 30th Loisaida Festival
We honored the LES's immigrant and migrant spirit and doubled attendance to an estimated participation of 30,000 people! More than just a cuchifritos street party, the festival is the largest Latinx-pride and visibility platform in Lower Manhattan, providing space and real-time to community organizations, individuals, small businesses, and more. It also presented the 4th edition of the now staple outdoor performance event of the weekend; the Theater Lab
.

Clearly 2017 has brought unsettling times for humanity, for the Caribbean and for Puerto Rico; but it was also a banner year in which we honored our core values of how cultural dialogue is essential for organizing, collaboration and action in times of need.
In New York, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, Loisaida's team and its artistic community has made big strides to expand their role as agents of social change, humanitarian relief, and grow as well as diversify our audiences, partners and initiatives. Thank you to Acacia Network, and all of you who have helped advance our efforts.
Happy Holidays and New Year! We hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Libertad Guerra
Director, Loisaida Inc.
