Worship Notes

This week we welcome guest preacher Rev. Dawn Taloyo, who serves the Pacific Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church as the Associate Superintendent. She is Ordained to Word and Sacrament and completed a Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary with a specialization in spirituality and spiritual direction. Dawn is a longtime friend of Westminster, having led appreciative inquiry training, retreats, and other adult education classes for us.

In addition, we will be singing a special song called "Our God is Like an Eagle" and hear the testimony of Ann Montague, who was part of the church for whom the song was written, in honor of Pride Month.

From Your Session

The Westminster session met for their regular meeting on June 21. The elders welcomed guests Ted Burney (from Buildings & Grounds) and Ben Aeby of Box Painting. The discussion centered on approval of funds for cleaning and treating the redwood cedar in the sanctuary and narthex with two coats of linseed oil. This needs to be done to prevent drying and cracking every 10-15 years. It is unclear when the last treatment was applied, but a paint can from the 1990’s was found which suggests this was the last time it was applied. Also being treated is the Ben Setziol wooden artwork. The session approved the bid by unanimous vote. The work on the sanctuary will be done during the month of August, and church services will be held in Boulder Hall. Look for more information coming soon. There was some elder training from the Book of Order. A discussion of session goals for 2023-2024 was tabled until the July 19 regular meeting.

Great News for Westminster

Last year, we learned of an ERTC (Employee Retention Tax Credit) rebate program that Westminster could be eligible to receive. Our accountant filed the paperwork to apply for the funds on our behalf. On Monday, June 12, we received checks totaling $117,000. We owe the accountant $9,250 for his work associated with the application, and we had included a conservative number of $27,000 as revenue in the 2023 Budget, leaving $80,750. At this point in time, Budget and Finance will deposit the funds in an interest-bearing account, and their allocation will become part of the 2024 budget development process.

Participate

Support the VBC Mission Project. Next Thursday and Friday is Changemaker's Lab Vacation Bible Camp! You are invited to help us with our mission project: collecting change to help refugees in Salem. There is a beaker next to the offering box in the sanctuary for any donations you might want to give. Please keep the leaders and students in your prayers this coming week.

New Photo Directory project needs help! The Outreach Committee has been working hard on updating the narthex to make it more welcoming. Now we feel it is time to work on updating the directory of our church members and friends. Did you know that the last photo directory was put together in 2015? Don’t you agree that it’s time to have a new one? The committee has been working on how to move forward with this project, and we need help! Our goal is to decide on a format as well as a photographer so that we might have a new directory by fall of 2023. If you are interested in being a part of this project, please contact Katie Nelson, Elder for Outreach, at nelsonkatieallstar@gmail.com, 503-580-5631.

Volunteer Opportunity! Nancy MacMorris-Adix is looking for 3 teams of 2 people each to work one Monday morning a month at the Family Building Blocks food pantry. It takes 1-2 hours, and timing is flexible. The job entails picking up food at the State St. warehouse and delivering it to the Lancaster location. If three teams join Nancy and Bill, it becomes a once-a-month commitment for each! Contact:
