Dear Families of the MS 104 Community:

I hope this message finds everyone doing well. The 2023-24 officially begins for students tomorrow! The entire MS 104 staff has been hard at work in preparation for the arrival of our students. We are so excited to see them and are very much looking forward to getting the year started. I have once again included information for tomorrow's procedures below in case some have not seen it yet.

Please see below for additional updates and announcements, including updates on student metro cards and staff contacts, and reminders about supply lists and the cell phone policy.

I look forward to welcoming your child to school tomorrow morning! Have a great evening!

Sincerely,

Rocco Macri, Principal

Update on Student Metro Cards

As of this time, our school is one of many that has yet to receive student metro cards for those that are eligible. This is the result of a delay in delivery of the cards to schools. Our Parent Coordinator Blanca Rivera has been consistently checking in with appropriate offices on a daily basis since last week informing them that we have yet to receive the cards.

As a result, we will not be able to distribute any metro cards to students this week. We are hopeful that we will receive the cards and be able to provide them to all eligible students early next week.

In lieu of metro cards, Ms. Rivera will be distributing letters on school letterhead explaining that students should be allowed on the train or bus as the DOE has not yet provided them with metro cards.

I apologize for this convenience and thank you for your understanding.

504 Plans for the 2023-24

Those students that have a 504 plan in place for medical and health needs must a have a new form completed for the 2023-24 school year. Those students requiring medication be administered during the school day must have a form on file in order for the nurse to be able to provide medication to your child.

To find the appropriate form for your child's needs, please click hereAll completed forms must be signed by your child's physician, and must have a signature from the parent or guardian as well. Your child cannot be serviced by the nurse for specific medical needs without these signatures.

Forms and medications should be delivered in person to the school nurse.

First Day of School is Thursday, September 7th!!!

All students are due back to school this Thursday, September 7th. The protocols for students are as follows:

GRADE 6- Grade six students should arrive to school beginning at 8:30 AM. Please be advised that the 8:30 AM start time is only for the first day of school. Beginning Friday, September 8th, students should arrive to the schoolyard by 8:20 AM. Students should report to the entrance to our schoolyard located at the corner of 20th street and Second Avenue. Upon arrival at this entry point, your child will be informed of their homeroom and directed to the appropriate homeroom line in the schoolyard. We encourage families dropping off their child to make note of their child's homeroom assignment. Parents escorting their children will not be permitted in to the yard. Homeroom teachers will be in the yard to greet their students. Once all students have arrived to their class, they will be taken to their homeroom classroom by the homeroom teacher. Students will receive their schedules from their homeroom teacher.

The day ends for all students at 2:40 PM. At the end of the day, sixth grade students will be dismissed in to the school yard. Parents will be able to access the yard via the entry point on the corner of 20th street and Second Avenue. Homeroom teachers will hold up a sign indicating the homeroom number as they exit. Please ensure that you have discussed your plan with your child if you plan on picking them up. The first few days of dismissal tend to be very busy so ensure that you have communicated with your child where you will be waiting for them.

GRADES 7 & 8- Grade seven and eight students should arrive to school by 8:20 AM.

Grade seven students will line up each day at the 20th street entrance of the building, with the line going towards Second Avenue.

Grade eight students will line up each day at the main entrance on 21st street.

Grade seven and eight students will report to LAST YEAR'S homeroom classroom to start the day. They will then receive their new homeroom assignment for this year. An announcement will then be made for students to transition to their new homeroom. Students will receive their schedules from their new homeroom teacher.

Grade seven and eight students will be dismissed out the exit point closest to their homeroom class at 2:40 PM. If you plan on picking up your child, please discuss in advance where you will meet them at dismissal.

As a reminder, middle school students are SELF-DISMISSED at the end of each day. Parental consent is not needed for students to go home on their own.

Staff members will be available to support new and returning students and families as they arrive to school to direct students to the appropriate entry points and ensure a smooth start to the day.

Supply Lists

Grade seven and eight supply needs will be discussed with students on the first day of school.

Cell Phone Policy for the 2023-24 School Year

Please find the Cell Phone Policy for the 2023-24 school year here

Cell phones, smart watches, airpods, bluetooth headphones, and other electronic and gaming systems may not be used on school grounds during the school day at any time. Upon arrival to school, students will place and lock their electronic devices in a Yondr pouch which will be in their possession throughout the day. The pouch will be unlocked at the end of the day via the magnetic locks at the exit points of the building.

Yondr pouches will be distributed to students during homeroom on Monday, September 11th. Please take time to review the policy with your child. The policy outlines the expectations and process for storing electronic devices each day and addresses actions that will be taken when students violate this policy.

We appreciate your cooperation and partnership regarding this policy.

Our Annual Fund is our primary source of fundraising. Your support will be more crucial than ever this year as our school faces unprecedented budget cuts and increased student need. Please give what you can.
