Rescue Report: Zhukov

Recently the CTMB approved a $4,388.34 grant to Southeastern Newfoundland Club Rescue to subsidize veterinary care for “Zhukov”.

Southeastern Newfoundland Club Rescue reported, “We took Zhukov into Rescue in September, 2023. We were contacted when he was observed at Wake County Animal Shelter in NC.  He was one day away from euthanasia.  We immediately arranged foster care. Unfortunately, he was in such bad condition he required an urgent care vet.  We were advised the only hope to save him was to get him to Veterinary Emergency Group in Cary, NC.  This boy deserved that chance.  When it was finally deemed he could be released but needed to be in a place where he was not around other animals due to pneumonia and keeping other dogs safe until his medication could take effect.  He has now been with the foster for over a month and his recovery is nothing short of miraculous.  Apparently, Zhukov's first language was Russian so he has also had to slowly learn English commands.  The foster care provider says he is an incredible joy and a quick learner.  Zhukov came to us totally shut down, depressed and a medical challenge.  He is now happy and healthy and ready for a forever home.”

NCA Rescue Fund grants are available to regional Newfoundland clubs to subsidize extraordinary veterinary costs for Newfoundlands surrendered to their Rescue programs.  Grant applications are reviewed and approved by the CTMB and funded by the generous donors to the NCA Rescue Fund.

Newfoundland Health Challenge 2023 a Quest for Help!

A question that may have been ignored, but certainly needs to be answered, “Why does the Health Challenge have fundraising campaigns for approved studies that are fully funded?” The purpose of the Health Challenge is to raise funds for research grants presented to the Charitable Trust for funding. When Grants are approved by Morris Animal Foundation, AKC Canine Health Foundation or submitted directly to the Charitable Trust Management Board (CTMB), if the CTMB agrees to support the grant, funds must be available at that time.

Currently the NCA Charitable Trust is funding a study to identify a genetic marker for SAS with Morris Animal Foundation. This study required full funding from the Newfoundland Health Challenge (NHC) for $50,000 resulting from a request from the CTMB for a proposal on SAS, called Donor Inspired.

Stolen Heartbeats

to support SAS Research

Currently, the Research Advisory Committee is reviewing Hemangiosarcoma proposals from Morris Animal Foundation for funding by the NHC.

These campaigns are vitally important to replenish funds for future studies. We must have funds available when a study is presented for funding.  We must keep moving forward with research that will benefit the Newfoundland dog. After all, the health of our breed is at stake.

Please donate NOW to improve the health of our breed and ensure a healthy future for the dogs!
