Leachate collection systems rely on gravity to move leachate from the landfill floor to a collection point.
This collection point, typically a vertical sump or side slop riser, is occupied by a leachate removal pump sized to move the leachate a specified elevation and distance.
However, landfills can grow horizontally and vertically over time. The increased distance and elevation can create situations where the original pump alone isn't enough to move the leachate efficiently.
Booster pumps are installed along the leachate force main (the pipe that carries the leachate).
They add hydraulic energy to the flow, essentially giving it a push to overcome the friction and elevation changes in the pipe.
This ensures leachate keeps moving towards the treatment facility or holding tank.
