To the Heart of Ohio Classical Academy Community,
As I do most weeks, I had the pleasure of chatting with a number of prospective parents interested in our school. The second most frequently asked question is always something around, “can you explain what Classical Education is in a nutshell?”
Whilst it is difficult to distill a robust educational philosophy down to a number of bullet points, I inevitably answer along the lines of the following factors; in part because they are highlighted by the Hillsdale K-12 Program from which we apply our in-school curriculum, but primarily because I perceive that they encapsulate the differentiating factors between a successful and a less-successful education.
- Tried & True Best Practices - We utilize the most effective techniques for both learning and instruction that have been cultivated over the past 2000 years of Western civilization, and we do so in a structured, deliberate way.
- Skills, Knowledge & Virtue - We emphasize a trifecta in our learning paradigm; (i) we learn the appropriate skills necessary for a particular discipline, (ii) we explore content matter in a deep and meaningful way, which fosters a love of learning, and (iii) we study content that leads to an appreciation of positive virtues that are worthy of aspiration to.
At this point, I usually extend an invitation to attend one of our parent info event nights, where we have the opportunity to discuss these ideas and our school offering much more in depth.
If you know of someone who may also be intrigued by the concepts above or how we can help a child attain his or her potential, I ask that you forward them this email, share our website, or invite them to a parent-info night as well.
For those of you who read this far to find out what my most frequently asked question is, I leave it to you as a puzzle; the answer is 6”6.
Very best,
