Researchers Discover Biomarker for Tracking Depression Recovery

Two DBS leads implanted into the subcallosal cingulate cortex, with nerve fibers extending into other brain regions. Brain activity signatures or biomarkers can help scientists track depression symptoms and optimize DBS techniques.: Ki Seung Choi/Mayberg lab, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Using a novel deep brain stimulation (DBS) device capable of recording brain signals, researchers have identified a pattern of brain activity or “biomarker” related to clinical signs of recovery from treatment-resistant depression. The findings from this small study are an important step toward using brain data to understand a patient’s response to DBS treatment.

One kidney is located on the left side of the body, and one is on the right side. There can be many differences in how the kidneys develop and where they are located. There are two main groups of kidney abnormalities: how the kidney develops within the womb and differences in shape and location.
