WEEK OF OCTOBER 6, 2023

Coastal California growing regions will experience near-record high temperatures due to a strong high-pressure ridge. These temperatures will increase insect and disease pressure, leading to heat-related defects in crops like Brassica and lettuce. Mildew activity and soil-related diseases will lower yields, prompting growers to use fungicide sprays and monitor INSV. Future weather patterns will impact supplies and quality during fall harvests.

The blueberry market is expected to be in demand exceeds supply throughout most of October. Supply has been decreasing daily as we transition out of domestic growing regions and into imports from South America and Mexico. Weather events have put an end to domestic crops in the PNW and have also delayed production coming out of MX and South America.

Broccoli, broccolini and baby sweet broccoli is still extremely short due to high humidity causing low yields. The quality has also been impacted with hollow core, brown bead, pin rot and stock rot.

Leafy greens are starting to be infected with the INSV virus that is starting to spread again. INSV can have dark spotting, yellowing and wilt or collapse. Supply will be limited for the next few weeks as growers try to mitigate the virus’s impact in the fields.

Mexican limes have moved to new growing areas but new blom has been severely impacted by recent weather events causing supply to sharly decline throughout the coming months. In addition, extreme heat and humidity have impacted quality and shelf life. For other citrus, we are seeing shortages on California Ruby grapefruit causing a tight marketplace until Texas begins production in a few weeks.

Green onions are struggling due to extreme hot weather in Northern Mexico that has brought harvesting and plant growth to a halt. With stunted growth and reduced yields, volume is low and we expect to see pricing rise to reflect this.
