All of the programs of the Arts Commission are based on the belief that arts and creativity are essential to every successful and thriving community.

National Arts in Education Week
September 10-16

In celebration of National Arts in Education Week during the week of September 10, the Arts Commission is sharing three new coloring pages. Everyone is invited to download, print, and enjoy the coloring pages that celebrate arts education and lifelong learning through the visual and performing arts! You are encouraged to share with friends, families, schools, and community locations. National Arts in Education Week is a national celebration recognizing the transformative power of the arts in education. Passed by Congress in 2010 through House Resolution 275, the celebration is designated to bring attention to this cause for elected officials and educational decision makers across the country and to support equitable access to the arts for all students.

Arts Learning Gallery Exhibition | |

The Arts Commission presents a group exhibition featuring artwork by the East Bay Heritage Quilters (EBHQ) through January 25, 2024. The exhibition is on view in the Board of Supervisors Lobby Gallery on the 5th Floor at the Alameda County Administration Building at 1221 Oak St., Oakland, CA. EBHQ was founded in 1978 and is one of the largest active quilting guilds in the United States. The exhibition features 15 quilters who are members of EBHQ. Alameda County Poetry Out Loud
School Participation Deadline October 13

All Alameda County high schools and community organizations with youth in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in Alameda County Poetry Out Loud. This national poetry recitation program helps students practice public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary creative expression. Poetry Out Loud provides free, online curriculum resources including a teacher’s guide, lesson plans, poetry archive, and student performance videos. Structured like a spelling bee, school/community organization winners advance to the County competition in February, then the State competition in March, and ultimately National Finals in April. Create CA Arts Advocacy Training and Tools
Training Sessions: September 19 & 21

Create CA, in partnership with Friends of Sacramento Arts, Arts Education Alliance of the Bay Area, Arts for LA and CA PTA, is offering a free training webinar about new opportunities for arts education resulting from the passage of Proposition 28. Known as the Arts and Music in Schools Act, it includes $800 million+ funding annually to increase equity and access to arts education. Parents, students, teachers and community members, sign up for the training to learn about ready-to-use tools that support communication with school leaders and help raise awareness about the opportunities resulting from Proposition 28.

The support and leadership provided by Melissa Wilk is critical to the work of the Arts Commission. The Auditor-Controller/Clerk-Recorder Agency has an extensive leadership role with the County government and the Arts Commission.
