Connecticut’s eBike Launch Program has a successful launch

In recent years, eBikes have grown in popularity in our state and across the country. They are becoming a go to alternative since they offer pedal assistance for riders, provide low environmental impact, and don’t require expensive fuel costs or extensive maintenance.

In June, Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) launched the state’s first eBike Incentive. This program was an instant success. Due to high demand, they closed the registration portal to consumers. The program focused on providing Point-of-Sale (POS) incentives to Connecticut residents who purchase an eligible eBike directly from a participating "brick and mortar" Connecticut eBike retailers. Manufacturers and retailers can still apply.

We’re excited to see this successful launch of this program. Get more details here. Happy e-riding.

Staying Ready: Region Three Anthrax Tabletop Exercise in Bloomfield

On June 9, CRCOG conducted a regional tabletop exercise in the Town of Bloomfield at the Marilyn Michaelson Senior Center. A tabletop exercise is a discussion-based exercise in response to a public safety scenario, intended to generate a dialogue of various issues to facilitate a conceptual understanding, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and to utilize plans, policies, and procedures.

The scenario for this tabletop exercise was an intentional release and exposure to anthrax at a sporting event honoring the Region 3 first responders. The scenario generated discussion on the public health readiness to identify persons at risk of exposure to the intentional anthrax release and the Region 3 public health response plans to dispense antibiotics to exposed first responders, their immediate family members and the identified exposed general population.

The sixty-five attendees sat at tables in groups based upon their local health department or health district jurisdictions. The scenario provided the groups the opportunity to apply their knowledge and response skills to work with the Region 3 Regional Coordination Center effectively and efficiently as well as utilize the Metropolitan Medical Response Plan and the Region 3 Mass Prophylaxis Plan.

This anthrax tabletop enhanced Region 3’s capability to communicate, collaborate and coordinate. The day validated the plans and procedures in place by identifying strengths and areas of improvement. Recommendations for revisions to the current plans, policies and procedures will be forthcoming in an after-action report and improvement plan. Thanks to all the participants, Jensen-Hughes for facilitation of the tabletop exercise, the staff of the Marilyn Michaelson Senior Center and the Connecticut Department of Public Health for funds through the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Cooperative Funding Grant.

Safety first: Summer driving tips

When summer hits, many of us tend to focus on vacations and road trips. Whether you’re traveling to another state or planning a staycation, we want you to drive safely. Before you hook up that new boat or camper or hit the road with your family or friends in your car, SUV, pickup, or RV, take the time to review these summer travel safety tips. Prevention and planning may take a little time up front but will spare you from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown - or worse yet, a highway crash – later.

CRCOG’s throwback fun fact

In 2000, the CAPTAIN System (laptop computers in police vehicles) was designated as the statewide standard. In 2001, there were about 70 organizations including police departments and state and federal agencies utilizing the CRCOG prototype. There were also approximately 1,000 cruisers throughout the state equipped with laptops.

This system is currently being phased out.
