Freedom School Family and Friends Ice Cream Social

Wednesday, July 26, 2:45 – 3:30 p.m. at Maplewood UMC

Maplewood UMC members are most welcome to attend and to assist with set-up and serving.

Email office@maplewoodumc.org if you are willing to serve or if you have questions.

You are invited to “shop early” for Items for Build a Gift, our Christmas outreach for children in the congregation and community, and for the Giving Tree, the outreach to families who need some extra assistance at Christmas time. The largest need for the Giving Tree ministry is $25 Walmart Gift cards. You can take a tag from the Giving Tree in the area at the back of the sanctuary or find a “shopping list” on the easel in the back of the sanctuary, on the website, or in the app under “Service.” Financial donations are also welcome.

Please be sure to note that your gift is for “Build A Gift” or “Giving Tree.”

Please deliver gifts to the church by the end of July.

Thank you for your generosity in July!

Dear Friends,

This week a guest reader read the book, “Emmanuel’s Dream: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah” to the Freedom School scholars. Emmanuel Yeboah was born with no shin bone in one of his legs. He was considered a curse according to the norms of his culture. But Emmanuel’s mother believed otherwise and encouraged Emmanuel, reminding him that his disability did not automatically destine him to the life of a beggar.

Emmanuel Yeboah learned to ride a bike with one leg and eventually rode the bike across his home country, Ghana, to demonstrate that "disability is not inability." His ride influenced government officials to pass legislation that gave disabled persons more rights.

You might want to check out this children's book from the library for your children or grandchildren, or just to read for yourself.

Emmanuel Yeboah’s story is one of several stories about real life heroes shared with the Freedom School Scholars. These stories help inspire the scholars to believe that they too CAN make a difference in their lives and the lives of those around them.

I believe that like the Freedom School scholars all of us benefit from hearing stories about heroes. We all need to be inspired.

This coming Sunday, we begin a sermon series, “Heroes of the Faith” which will focus on stories of heroic women in the Bible. We will read the story of an Old Testament hero, Deborah, who is a prophet, a judge, and wife, found in the Old Testament book of Judges. Deborah was truly courageous, but as we read her story, we will see that she and one of Israel’s generals, Barak, were even stronger together. None of us can go it alone—even the heroes among us!

I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday as we are inspired by the hero, Deborah.

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim
