A Message from our CEO

Hi friends and colleagues,

As we wrap up another inspirational year here at CEN, I reflect with gratitude on our community for its continued kinship and support. You have been the driving force behind our capacity-building initiatives and the resources we provide to professionals in the nonprofit sector. Together, we've created a positive ripple effect, empowering and strengthening those among us - and those we serve. I want to express my sincere appreciation for our incredible team, funders, and partners for being the heartbeat of our programming. As we embrace the forthcoming holiday season, let us carry forward this spirit of gratitude into the new year, steadfast in our commitment to uplift and empower the individuals who contribute to the vibrancy and diversity of our community.

-Shana Peete, Chief Executive Officer

Telling a New Story: Inclusion in the Arts Workshop

It's an open secret that the arts have lacked and continue to lack inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and liberation. To meet the call to embody IDEAL principles, we recommend starting with an examination of the cultures and oppressive structures within organizations and the field. This workshop provides tools to encourage the incorporation of IDEAL principles and focus on fostering belonging in order to engage and value a variety of perspectives, experiences, cultures, and more.

This session will be led by guest facilitator Jonathan Francisco Borca. An advocate, storyteller, and performing artist, Borca is the Deputy Director of the School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza (SOAC). Raised Eastside San José, Borca has over a decade of experience developing and scaling programs. Notable accomplishments include Directing efforts for the California Arts Council Administrators of Color Fellowship, a statewide initiative aiming to uplift an inclusive workforce in 2021, scaling sponsorship for various entities, and most recently, he was honored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra for “Leadership in Arts and Culture.” In June 2022, Borca was appointed as an Arts Commissioner for the City of San Jose.

Intended Audience: Staff (at all levels), executive directors, board members, volunteers and community supporters of arts organizations.

Management Basics: Part 1

Have you found yourself leading a team without any formal training on what it takes to be a successful people manager? Are you struggling with management and/or looking for a refresher on management best practices? Especially in the nonprofit sector, where resources for training are often scarce at best, you are not alone! This workshop will show you the management techniques you need to set yourself – and your team! – up for success. Participants will learn how to set expectations, manage performance day-to-day, and review human resources best practices. Additionally, we'll offer leading practices and strategies for managing and working remotely, as well as resources to help staff cope during difficult times. You will also leave with the tools to improve productivity, communication, and overall team satisfaction.

Intended Audience: Nonprofit staff in or aspiring to management positions.

Register - Jan. 9

Management Basics: Part 2

People are your organization's most valuable resource, and effective team management can be one of your biggest opportunities for impact -- especially during times of crisis. Effective leaders proactively address issues within teams that would otherwise contribute to a culture of distrust and resentment. In this workshop, participants will gain ways to build a culture founded on trust (increasingly important in a virtual setting) by exploring working styles and setting expectations around working together. The workshop will also identify ways to turn a currently dysfunctional employee/team into a high performing asset. Bring your own examples/struggles, and we will work together to create action plans. If you are looking for a refresher on leading management practices, you may also want to check out our "Management Basics - Part 1" workshop.

Intended Audience: Nonprofit staff, at all levels, looking for resources to manage effective teams.

Register - Jan. 9

Preventing Burnout: Self-Care in a Selfless Sector

Workplace stress is unavoidable, especially in the nonprofit sector where compassion fatigue runs rampant and we see high rates of turnover and burnout year after year. Ultimately, the industry and institutions must do a better job of caring for its employees. While CEN continues the fight for organizational and systemic change, we also recognize the immediate need for external resources and support for you, the individuals working within these dysfunctional systems.

This course provides space and tools to help you lean in without burning out. Participants will join in productive conversations that explore new strategies and coping skills while gaining tangible resources to identify workplace stressors, end self-deprecating talk, build communicative workplace structures, and calmly deal with change at any level in an organization. As a result of this session, participants will be better equipped to effectively manage daily upsets, foster healthy relationships with coworkers and clients, and increase happiness and satisfaction in day-to-day work life.

Intended Audience: Nonprofit executives, board members, emerging leaders and staff.

Register - Jan. 11

Fair Pay for Northern CA Nonprofits Survey

This past year, 779 nonprofit organizations reporting on more than 40,000 jobs participated in the 2023 survey, making it the largest in the survey's 45-year history. Northern California nonprofits rely on a robust compensation survey to attract and retain qualified staff amidst economic uncertainties and changing economic climates. This survey equips organizations with crucial data on compensation, benefits, and personnel policies. It aids in setting fair salaries, evaluating industry standards, budgeting for new staff, conducting internal analyses, justifying executive compensation, and providing locally relevant benchmarks. Unlike national surveys, the regional focus ensures accurate comparisons within the local economic community.

To participate in Fair Pay for Northern CA Nonprofits 2024 and access updated data on over 200 nonprofit jobs in Northern California, featuring new roles in Development, Education, Environment, Legal Services, and Operations, visit www.nonprofitcomp.com or email survey@nonprofitcomp.com.

Nonprofit Sector Opportunities

Withinnovate! - Volunteer Opportunity

Withinnovate! is a social venture that believes in the power of early career professionals to transform nonprofit organizations (and their own careers) through the adoption of intrapreneurship.

Now that we've seen first hand the power of this approach, we're taking a step back to learn more about how to empower early career professionals day in and day out. What has worked well? Where do challenges remain?

We're looking for volunteers at all levels who'd be willing to speak with us for 30-min conversation in December 2023-January 2024. For those who participate, we will share back a report on what we learned and how it can support you in your organization and/or career journey.

To participate, please email us at withinnovate@gmail.com.
