Meet September featured artist - Christine Regan Davi.
Christine would like to give us an inside look into her work and why she creates in her own words:
"I create because it deepens my experience of this great, wild world. My works often reveal to me some intangible surprise—a delight or an empathy or an ache, often about subjects I assumed I knew well. As a photographer, writer, and, more recently, student of pastels, I’m enchanted by these discoveries, which keep me in conversation with the liminal wonders of the human heart.
So often the process of creating is an inward journey, whether or not we intend it to be so. In my work, I find the significance of a piece isn’t apparent until long after an image is first created. This is especially true in my photography, for it is a wonder why one particular image holds meaning and another, perhaps captured seconds later, does not. An example of this is seen with the In the Deep exhibit currently on show at New Dawn Arts Center (through September 16). I’ve taken hundreds of images of Avi, the girl appearing in Where the Wild Horses Roam, but I’ve often considered why this specific image resonates with me in ways that other images—perhaps of her smiling or laughing—do not. For me, they speak to family illness and loss, hers and my own, mirror experiences separated by generations.
In another area of focus, I continue to explore minimalistic still life studies, as seen in Gerbera, where I can probe the interaction of color and light, and our powers of (mis)perception. In my photography, I consider an image unfinished until I make and approve a print. Some artists strive for consistency from print to print, but I embrace the subtle differences that come during the printing process; no two of my prints are exactly alike due to nuances of my creative mood at the time of printing. I take care in selecting archival fine art cotton and rice papers with finishes that enhance the qualities of each piece.
I’m owner and managing director of Gallery System Art Displays, a small business focused on art hanging and lighting equipment. I’m also a member of the Women’s Caucus for Art and the Gardner Area League of Artists; recent highlights include facilitating a six-week Ashburnham Art Stewards program and acceptance into the Hopkinton Center for the Arts “2023 Arts in Bloom” exhibition, juried by Kaveh Mojtabai, founder and publisher of Artscope magazine."
As she mentions, Christine currently has several images in the three-person show "In The Deep" at the New Dawn Arts Center in Ashburnham, MA. See member news below for more information about this exhibition.
