Eucharistic Revival Opportunity

Advent Resource

Greetings! As we prepare for the season of Advent, the Diocese of St. Cloud once again offers this Advent prayer journal to use individually or in small groups. It includes Scripture, reflection and prayer. This resource is an original work of the local Eucharistic Revival prayer team, calling people into a deeper encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist.

Download the Advent Prayer Guide and Journal at https://stcdio.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2023-Eucharistic-Revival-Advent-prayer-journal-small-web.pdf.

Fr. Tom Knoblach ♦ Vicar for Clergy and Health Care Ethics ♦ (320) 251-2340

Vicar for Health Care Ethics

Cemetery Survey – Thanks to all who responded to the cemetery survey. We are compiling the data received for our own awareness. Again, this is not intended in any way to replace local control and responsibility of our parish cemeteries or create uniform policies for all. If you missed the opportunity to submit your responses, you can still do so at any time. There is much good work and compassionate ministry to families who have experienced the death of loved ones through this final corporal work of mercy.

Academic Affiliation between CentraCare Health and the University of Minnesota – You may have seen media coverage of the proposed medical school to begin enrolling students in 2025, focused on developing providers for ensuring better health access and outcomes for rural communities. This is a collaboration between CentraCare and the U of M. Some of the training and clinical practice will take place at St. Cloud Hospital. Please know that agreements are in place that no procedures contrary to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services will be performed in any facility under the control of St. Cloud Hospital, inpatient or outpatient. While the environment of health care and our culture is constantly changing, the Catholic identity of our health care facilities is regularly monitored and education in Catholic identity and mission is ongoing. You can find the current, sixth edition of the Ethical and Religious Directives at ethical-religious-directives-catholic-health-service-sixth-edition-2016-06_0.pdf (usccb.org).

Vicar for Clergy

As Bishop Neary mentioned at the October Clergy Conference, the voices of priests and deacons will be essential in the planning process for the future of the Diocese of Saint Cloud. An assembly of some type will take place to hear your input, though the first and most important opportunity for this will be the Area Catholic Community presentations each month at St. Mary’s Cathedral with the bishop and other leaders in the diocese. Much more information on those sessions is available from Brenda Kresky and the Office of Planning. We encourage you to engage leadership in your parishes and ACCs and tell the honest story of the positive successes and realistic challenges you experience.

NOTES FROM THE DIOCESAN OFFICES

David Fremo ♦ (320) 251-0111

Catholic Schools – As we begin the wondrous season of Advent and prepare for the coming of Christ, we enter into one of the times where the distinct possibilities of Catholic schools are most pronounced: forming ourselves and others in the faith through practice and celebration that permeates all of our learning and living.

Dr. Timothy Cook of Creighton University has captured this in his NCEA publication Charism and Culture: Cultivating Catholic Identity in Catholic Schools:

“Symbols, rituals, and stories nourish the Catholic imagination and inspire faith. A Catholic school’s symbolic culture is a vehicle of faith formation and charism (distinct spiritual gift) transmission. Catholic schools with a symbolic way of life that flows from their focused identity and particular spirit help bolster faith by making the Catholic symbolic tradition relevant, engaging, and meaningful for members of the school community…A school should never assume that members know the significance of school symbols and traditions…It is important for schools to continually educate members about the school’s symbolic culture.” (p. 28)

Certainly, we each have powerful and moving memories of celebrating Advent and Christmas from many times in our own lives. For those who attended Catholic schools, the well of memories can be very deep and rich, as the seeds of faith are planted and nourished that grow throughout our lives. The wonder of experiencing Joseph and Mary, the shepherd and angels, the birth in a manger and the songs of praise and hope about the Christ child begin with us inviting young people into the story for the first time–and for many more “first times” as we accompany them. Traditions are most meaningful when we take the time to slow down, reflect on them, teach about them, and ask others to participate. In this time of waiting, let us once again experience the story of the coming of Christ, all over again, for the first time. Let us extend a hand and heart and share this experience with those in our school communities: students, colleagues and parents alike.

December 14 & 18 – DRE/YM Gathering: Looking Forward to Lent…even though it’s Advent. From 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (9:30 a.m. hospitality) on December 14 at Centre for Christ in Sauk Centre or December 18 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie.

As leaders, we are always looking a season or two ahead to plan for our parishes. Join us for a day that will include:

  • Ideas to bring Lent to life for parishes, families, children, and teens
  • Experiential learning – an opportunity to engage, pray, and be transformed
  • Networking with other ministers

A light breakfast and lunch are provided. Please register by December 11 at https://forms.gle/prJSA7YHUp74sDmcA

December 4 & 18 - Zoom Prayer Sessions – Join us every other Monday at 9:00 a.m. for thirty minutes of prayer via Zoom. Jesus reminds us of the need to pray, but as leaders we are often in charge of leading prayer rather than allowing prayer to transform us as ministers. This opportunity is for anyone in parish ministry who would like to start their week off with Jesus. To join us, click this link:

Pastoral Visits with Bishop Neary – In November, we are welcoming the teams from the Harvest of Hope, Northern Cross, and One in Faith ACCs. We will share that report soon. The December pastoral visit (December 20) will include teams from the Benedictine Catholic Communities of St. John the Baptist and St. Joesph, One in Christ, and Christ Our Hope.

The goals of the visits are threefold:

  • To build bridges for a thriving mission across parishes in an ACC
  • To develop ACCs as learning communities through listening and dialogue
  • To offer radical hospitality to nurture relationships between Bishop Neary, the diocesan pastoral team, and ACC pastoral leadership

This effort is a collaboration between the Diocese of Saint Cloud and Bridge Builders for a Thriving Mission Initiative.

Linda Kaiser ♦ (320) 251-2340

December is a very busy month for parishes and Catholic schools.  That being said, please make sure safe environment training is on your calendar to be completed soon. The goal this year is to have safe environment training for children completed by the end of January.

Please also take time if you are a site administrator to look at all the folks in your database. This last month all employees, Catholic school teachers, priests, deacons and candidates for ordination were reviewed to make sure all background checks and training were up to date.

  • Over 500 volunteers have expired background checks and training. If they are still volunteering, they need to complete the training and background checks as soon as possible. If they no longer volunteer, they need to be archived.

Your help in achieving the goal to have full compliance is greatly appreciated.

February 18 – Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion – All catechumens, as a part of their faith journey to the Easter Sacraments at the Easter Vigil in 2024, must be present at the Rite of Election on Sunday, February 18. The Church has gifted us with this wonderful rite, and we are called to celebrate it to its fullest. If for a serious pastoral reason, a catechumen is unable to participate in this liturgy you must contact the Office of Worship to discuss the options available. Candidates who are already one with us in Christian baptism, are strongly encouraged to participate in this liturgy. Register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/riteofelection. Please complete the registration by February 11.
