Helping Members Prepare for Retirement
October 28: PPOA was proud to bring together a panel of experts on Saturday for a retirement workshop at the union office in San Dimas. The conference center was filled to capacity with PPOA members interested in setting themselves up for a well-earned retirement and the speakers on hand delivered relevant advice on a wide range of topics. We are grateful to LACERA, the Fraternal Order of Police, Empower, Captain Shawn Kehoe, the firm of Lewis, Marenstein, Wicke, Sherwin and Lee as well as PPOA Board Member Jim Schallert for ensuring that all members in attendance gained invaluable insight about properly preparing for life after a career of public service.

The next PPOA Retirement Workshop will be hosted in Spring 2024. Details on that event will be shared with members soon.

PPOA Legislative Committee Meeting
November 2: Members of the PPOA Legislative Committee hosted a teleconference with our Sacramento legislative representatives — Lang, Hansen, Giroux and Kidane — for the monthly discussion about legislative proposals in the current 2023-2024 session that may potentially impact PPOA members and public safety employees statewide.

Meeting participants from PPOA included President Nancy Escobedo, 1st Vice President Jay Chapman, Board Member Roel Garcia, and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr.

PPOA has a proven track record of impactful legislative strategies that stretches back more than 50 years and has dramatically improved the rights and benefits of generations of PPOA members.
Support for Crime Survivors
November 2: First Vice President Jay Chapman attended the Crime Survivors Celebration Awards Gala on behalf of PPOA's Star & Shield Foundation. This event supports the work of the Crime Survivors Resource Center and pays tribute to those in our community who have gone above and beyond to help and empower survivors of crime. Personnel from numerous Southern California agencies were honored at the gala on Thursday, including detectives from the LASD Special Victims Bureau.
PPOA Board Election Reminder
November 3: By now, all Unit 612 and 621 members eligible to vote in the PPOA board elections should have received a ballot in the mail. Per PPOA by-laws, completed ballots must be received by 11/20/23 and will be counted in the PPOA Conference Center on 11/21/23.

Fraternal Order of Police News Update
PPOA members have long benefitted from our affiliation with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 368,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide. All active PPOA members are part of California FOP Lodge 1.

Important news regarding FOP membership for retired PPOA members: When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken:
To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $40 for 2023. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary: wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net. Be sure to include your full name and advise you are a retired PPOA member requesting membership with FOP.

Please make it a point to check out Washington Watch — a weekly news update provided by the National FOP. We encourage PPOA members to stay up to date on the legislative news and activity impacting public safety personnel nationwide.
