TUESDAY MEMO
1st grader Bodhi practiced his read-aloud skills with his sister 3rd grader Violet. The whole 1st grade enjoyed this activity in the 3rd grade classroom, coincidentally with many of their own siblings and cousins who happen to be in that class.
Hello {First Name},

Tuesdays is just how we start the weeks now! Thanks to everyone for understanding how hard it is to make the decisions about delay/cancellation, and how much we want to keep our community safe.

Happy Tuesday,
Nelia

NOTES
HOLIDAY MEALS FOR TEACHERS
The teachers are really looking forward to the breakfasts and lunches being prepared later this week! We thank you so much for making us feel cared for and appreciated.

Parent organizer Molly Moghari says there is just one spot left in need of a volunteer: Friday breakfast: gluten and dairy free, meat welcome, to go alongside someone else's vegetarian tart. Maybe some bacon or sausage, or ham and egg cups, or nut bars, or hard boiled eggs?

Sign up for the meal train here. If you have any questions please reach out to Molly.
COCOA SALE & MOVIE NIGHT - STUDENT COUNCIL EVENTS
The Student Council is planning two events this month:
  • Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Hot Cocoa Sale last week, the Student Council raised $270 for PE equipment and are working with Sean to choose things they'd like to have as part of their curriculum.
  • K-8 Movie Night will happen this Friday, December 15. We'll show Ratatouille (rated G) at 5:00 and Goonies (rated PG) at 7:00. We need a few parent volunteer chaperones to work with Nelia and Nathan: please email Nelia if you can help. Parents are welcome to drop off students of all ages. Admission is free, and snacks will be sold. Funds raised from snacks will be donated to H.O.P.E. Bring your own blankets and pillows; pajamas are encouraged. Please plan to pick up students at 6:45 pm or 8:45 pm.
ICE SKATING
On Friday all 6-8th graders will go ice skating, and elementary students will remain on campus. Parents and siblings are always encouraged to join us at the rink, come skate! Please pick up at those locations at 3:15 on Friday.

This is the final week of this program, read on about Friday afternoons in January and February below.
MYTHOLOGY DAY
Next Wednesday, December 20 will be our annual Mythology Day celebration. We will have a special schedule for the whole school, with students rotating by house through a variety of activities led by the 8th graders. It is the half day before the holiday vacation, and so early dismissal will be at 12:30 for all PK-8th graders at Riverside.

This week and next, students will be studying myths, folktales, and characters of lore. Specifically, master storyteller Roy is visiting elementary classrooms to tell the tale of Cupid and Psyche, which has a lot of similarities with the story of Beauty and the Beast, the middle school play this year.

Students will be presenting in morning Assemblies next week, and parents are encouraged to attend if their schedules allow:
  • Monday: 3rd-4th graders will be presenting skits about classical myths
  • Tuesday: 5th graders will give individual speeches about mythological characters
  • Wednesday: 6-8th graders will give individual speeches about mythological characters

At the end of the day next Wednesday, all K-8th graders will participate in the "Urn of Fate," a classically themed gift exchange. Each student should bring in a simple, wrapped gift (a guideline for the value being $5 or less), by Tuesday the 19th and give them to Jamie (K-2nd grade gifts), Hanna (3rd-5th gifts), or Nathan (6th-8th gifts). This year we will continue exchanging gifts in these groups, so you can find something appealing to a student of similar age: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th.
SKIING AND RIDING IN JANUARY
Thank you to everyone for attending to the many forms and communication related to our three skiing/riding programs on Friday afternoons in January and February. Those dates will be January 12, 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16. Note that we will have a regular day at school on our first Friday after the vacation, January 5. Some more details:

K-8 Downhill Ski/Ride at Burke Mountain
  • Equipment: If you have your own, please take the time this month to be sure that it still fits and is fully functional. Consider getting a tune-up at the resort or one of the local shops. If you need to replace anything, we suggest the Burke PTO Ski Shop in West Burke, through personal appointment. Season leases from VSS should be finalized by now, unless your child's fitting happened here at school, in which case that equipment will be available for pick up soon. Daily rentals from Burke Mountain are only available to those who completed paperwork and were fitted here at school in November.
  • Fees: Lift tickets and lessons for students are included in Riverside's tuition, those of you who have season passes save Riverside that cost, we are grateful and hope we have accurate information, please let Nelia know of any changes. Daily rental fees of $10-15 and chaperone lift tickets of $10 will be applied to your school store account.
  • Chaperones: If you haven't already, please complete the form Nelia emailed last week to help clarify your specific availability and preferences.
  • Pick Up: Plan to find your child in the lower level of the base lodge at 3:30, unless you gave permission for them to ski unsupervised until the lifts close at 4:00. Riverside teachers will not be supervising students in the lodge after 3:45.
  • Questions: Email Nelia, who is coordinating the program.

CLUBS
  • 6-8th Math Counts Club has missed so many Mondays, and next week is usually busy with Mythology Day prep for middle schoolers, so Kim is going to cancel Math Counts for Monday December 18th. ANNUAL APPEAL
We are sincerely grateful for the numerous ways in which Riverside Families contribute to the health of our school. As you've read in previous Memos, we rely on the current parent community to organize fundraisers to help bridge the gap between tuition and expenses. We notice and appreciate the hours of time and expertise that all parents give in their work on committees, baking, volunteering, substitute teaching, chaperoning, gardening, painting, and more.

Our other key strategy in raising the income we need is our Annual Fund, an appeal for which goes out to almost everyone we know. While we'd like you to consider the size of your gift as it relates to the difference Riverside makes in your lives and your other philanthropy, what matters most is simply your participation. There is no gift that is too small. If you haven't already, please consider making a gift to Riverside today.
